Sleights of Mind explains magic tricks by telling one about the shortcuts, limits, and programming of brain (and attendant sensory systems) that facilitate such tricks. The reader needn’t be concerned that the book will spoil all the illusionists’ secrets for one. The authors carefully demarcate the beginnings and endings of spoiler sections that explicitly explain tricks. This allows a reader to skip over such sections if one doesn’t want to know the trick. I suspect few readers do skip the spoiler sections because that’s where the rubber meets the road in terms of the neuroscientific concepts being discussed. The spoiler sections are an attempt to comply with the magician’s code (the neuroscientist authors became magicians themselves) and to maintain a good relationships with the many magicians (some, like Teller or the Amaz!ng Randi, quite famous) who cooperated in the writing of the book.Over 12 chapters, the authors explain the neuroscience of how various classes of illusion work. Most of the chapters address a specific class or subclass of illusion. The first few chapters deal with visual illusions. We look at the world in what seems like crystal clarity (at least with glasses on or contacts in), but there are many limitations and gaps in our visual processing system. While it seems like we are directly seeing the world around us, in point of fact, our visual experience is a product of the brain reconstructing information that the eyes take in—and it doesn’t do it as perfectly as our brain tricks us into believing. As the authors state it, “The spooky truth is that your brain constructs reality, visual and otherwise.” Chapter 3, deals with illusion in art, which is little outside the theme of the book, but it offers an opportunity to explain some intriguing facts about how the brain and eyes work in concert. The next couple chapters (Ch. 4 and 5) deal with cognitive illusions. Just like our visual system, our conscious minds save energy by engaging in short-cuts that disguise the mind’s limits while offering the possibility of manipulation. The brain also works hard to reconcile what appear to be inconsistencies, and often this reconciliation leads us astray. Misdirection is discussed in detail. Our minds are primed to let certain actions and sensory inputs draw its attention, and humans are awful at paying attention to more than one input stream at a time. Teller explains that, “Action is motion with a purpose.” So, if one can give one’s movement a purpose (even scratching one’s chin) it will be ignored while movements seemingly without purpose are anomalous and draw attention. The authors introduce the reader to mirror neurons—the part of our brains that take observations of another’s actions and makes forecasts about that person’s intent. This system is highly hackable by magicians.Chapter 5 informs us that we aren’t as good at multitasking as we think—which is to say we completely stink at it but tend to think we are awesome multitaskers. The gorilla experiment is offered as a prime example of this situation. In the gorilla experiment, about half-a-dozen people, moving around randomly, pass a ball / balls among themselves. The subject is asked to count the number of passes. In the middle of this activity a man in a gorilla suit walks through the middle of the rapidly moving passers. When asked whether they saw the gorilla, most people say they didn’t (and those who do see the gorilla invariably offer a count of passes that is vastly off the mark.) [If this is either unclear or unbelievable, you can YouTube it.]Chapter 6 examines multisensory illusions. The quintessential example is how our brains lead us believe that the sound of a ventriloquist’s voice is coming from the moving lips of a dummy. (Also, it seems like voices are coming from the lips of actors on screen in the movies, even though the speakers are probably off to the side in the walls or ceiling.) Synesthesia (cross-wiring between senses and brain such that some people may always see the number 5 in red or hear a C-sharp in green) is introduced to the reader.Chapter 7 explores the illusions of memory. Just as with our vision and attention, our memories aren’t as indelible as they seem to be. We think we’re calling up a transcription of the events of our lives, but really we’re remembering the last remembrance of said event. This can lead to a migration / distortion of events in the same manner as the kid’s experiment whereby one whispers a phrase into the ear of the kid in the next chair and it traverses the classroom. The original sentence “The cat is on the windowsill” invariably becomes something like “Lenny Kravitz steals puppies from the till.” (Have you ever experienced a situation in which a person remembers the details of an event substantially differently from yourself even if the broad brushstrokes are the same?) Some entertainers use pneumonic tricks to convince audiences that they have supernatural mental abilities when—in fact—they have merely turned understanding of memory to their advantage.Chapter 8 considers how in-built expectations and assumptions are exploited by magicians and mentalists. Again, these methods work because our brains employ all sorts of energy-saving shortcuts. For example, our brains often do the same thing as Google’s search engine—filling in the blanks by taking advantage of one’s experience to avoid the need for costly cognitive processing.Chapter 9 explains that our “free choices” are often not so “free” as we think. One of the most disconcerting, yet intriguing, facts to come from the onslaught of brain imaging studies since the 1990’s is that our decisions are made on a subconscious level before our conscious minds are even aware the decision has been made. Prior to this, we’d always been under the misapprehension that we are consciously making all these decisions--big and small--because the conscious mind is just a big credit stealer (to be fair, the conscious mind doesn’t recognize that it’s so out of the loop in decision making.) So many of our decisions are made in predictable ways by emotional / automated responses, and mentalists use that fact to their advantage.Chapter 10 is a catchall for topics that didn’t fit into earlier chapters, including hypnosis, superstitions, and the gambler’s fallacy (i.e. the idea that a roulette number that hasn’t come up in a while [or slot machine that hasn’t paid off recently] is bound to pay soon—regardless of the probability distribution that actually rules the outcome.)The remainder of the book tells the story of the author’s try-out for a magic society and discusses the question of whether knowing the neurological and psychological roots of magic tricks will kill magic as a source of entertainment. I found the latter to be the more interesting discussion. The authors are optimistic about magic’s survival, and offer good reasons. After all, almost nobody believes that magicians are conducting supernatural activities [not even people who take some wildly unsubstantiated beliefs as givens.] Even knowing how the tricks work doesn’t create the ability to see through the tricks because so many of the factors that magicians exploit operate on a subconsciously programmed level, and such proclivities would have to be trained away. People who want to enjoy the spectacle of magic aren’t likely to go to the trouble of training themselves in that way.I enjoyed this book even though I’m not particularly a fan of magic—though I did find myself watching quite a few YouTube clips of the magicians mentioned in the book. If you’re interested in how one’s mind and sensory systems work, and the limitations of those systems, you’ll find this book worthwhile. If you’re into magic, you’ll like it all the more so.

A well-presented treatise on how neuro-science is revealing the how and why we perceive our surroundings as we do. If you are interested in Psychology, Neurology, and Psychiatry, you will find this book interesting. This is not a medical text, so, the average student of the mind-sciences should be able to comprehend it without difficulty. For example, I have a Master's Degree in Clinical Social Work and I had no difficulty with the concepts. The useful novelty of this book is that the authors recognized how the profession of magical-entertainment is all about tricking the perceptions of the audience. So, by bringing together what neuro-science shows us about the how and why we perceive as we do and contrasting it with magical techniques, we gain a clearer picture of how our minds work. Fascinating!

You'd think magicians could learn a thing or two from neuroscientists, but this book is all about how two neuroscientists are learning what to study and why from professional magicians. Sleights of Mind is a fun layman's read of how our vision works and how our minds interpret what we see. I wasn't a magic fan nor a neuroscience fan when I started this book, but I am now! I learned why, when I edit my writing, I miss so many errors. I don't see them! My mind is conjuring up what the words are supposed to be, because that's how our minds have evolved to be more efficient. We have a limited range of focus when we see, too, and surrounding neurons are "turned off."I finished this book with a greater respect for magicians not only for their skill, but also for what they've known for ages about the human mind, things neuroscientists are just discovering. I also learned, if I'm ever on a jury, not to put too much weight into eye witnesses' testimonies. Nothing can deceive us like our own minds!

While this book is not simple simply put this book is about how our mind perceives (underscore perceives) the physical world around us primarily through the integration of our visual system in combination with other systems. The primary way that this is explored is, voila! through the art and spectacle of magic (but strictly defined as those practitioners who deal in illusions, sleights, and memory and expectational manipulations; this is not to be confused by the hucksters who claim supernatural power or innate abilities to seemingly defy reality).I was tempted to end my review at that summary sentence but...nah, I'll go on. "Sleights of Mind" was researched and written by a scientific husband and wife duo (Susana Martinez-Conde, Ph.D., director of the Laboratory of Visual Neuroscience at BNI and her husband, Stephen Macknik, Ph.D., is the director of the Laboratory of Behavioral Neurophysiology at Barrow Neurological Institute) and, while many of the concepts are clear if not completely concise and the writing flows (if you don't stop and read shadowed blocks that are interesting asides about applications or examples of what they're currently talking about), the technical jargon is kept to a minimum and much of what is said could have been said in shorter or condensed form. But here we have what the duo no doubt experienced repeatedly and highlight and that is that magic and illusions are just as much about showmanship and misdirection as they are about the tricks of the trades themselves. As such Macknik and Conde include healthy portions of schtick, describing in detail quite a few illusionists from the way that they dress and present themselves to their audiences visually as well as mannerisms that they employ and jokes that they use. While I was expecting that the most interesting part of the book would be finding out about how our brain works it turns out that the discussions of the magicians/ illusionists was for me the most interesting.Conde & Macknik also go to lengths to describe how the magic is accomplished, giving many "spoiler alerts". Perhaps it was just me but I couldn't wrap my head around many of the tricks that they were describing as I couldn't adequately visually picture them based on the descriptions. I wonder if other people had the same experience?Overall I was very glad to have purchased this book. I work in the field of psychology with adolescents and some of the information herein has been helpful in that it can help me point out more concrete ways in which their information systems can foul them (and others) up and how we can possibly avoid this sometimes by increasing our awareness of such phenomena. But I didn't come away having learned anything really substantially new about neuroscience (now about magic, I did) and in that I was a little disappointed. Still, an enjoyable read, not overly technical, and fairly highly recommended.* One last note: Though not their primary purpose in writing this book Macknik & Conde present themselves not just as skeptics of the highest order, demythologizing "magic", but as worshippers of the material sciences and devout believers that there are no actual supernatural or spiritual (as in suggesting another realm or reality outside of the material world); they believe that through dedicated study and practice the secrets of the universe can be unlocked and that there are no secrets outside of the material universe. They don't state this outright anywhere but these assumptions are presented clearly enough in a number of ways and are taken for granted by the authors. This is not surprising. But if you are a believer (you have a religious worldview of some sort, such as being Muslim or Buddhist or Christian, or if you simply believe in a non-materialistic spiritual realm and are strongly influenced by horoscopes or psychics) you might be set back or bothered a little by some of their presentations or assertions.

I don’t think it’s hyperbolic to call Carlos Hernandez’ Sal & Gabi Break the Universe a mold-breaker. Any expectations you bring to the book based on the publishing line it’s a part of, the genre it falls into, or the age reader it’s aimed at, are likely to be mistaken. The main characters also don’t fall into expected roles from similar stories.Rick Riordan’s various series have been mythology-based, and most of the initial titles in the Rick Riordan Presents line have stayed in that mold while lifting up the voices of marginalized peoples to tell stories from their own cultures. In Sal & Gabi, Hernandez makes full use of his heritage, but there’s almost no mention of mythology or gods. Instead, the author immerses us in modern Cuban-American language and cuisine, and … sleight-of-hand magic? Yep. Sal’s goal is to be a different kind of hero: a magician who brings joy to sick kids stuck in hospital just like the magician who did it for him. There’s no demi-god lineage, no monsters waiting to attack. The little bit of the past that impacts Sal’s present is not a mythological past but rather his own.In fact, there are no fantasy/magic elements at all other than Sal’s sleight-of-hand. The book is, I think, the first under the RRP umbrella to be science fiction. But rather than the far-future we often see in MG and YA books, this is a near future that is recognizably our own world with some hints of advanced (if not openly available) technology. And rather than dystopia, we get loving families, helpful adults, and a sense of community and hope. Even at the book’s darkest moments, and there are a couple, I didn’t feel despondent or mired down.Hernandez also manages to avoid one of the problems I struggle with in the few middle-grade books I’ve read, including the early Percy Jackson books (as much as I loved them): his characters act and sound like thirteen-year-olds. So many MG characters either read much younger than their supposed age, or much older. Reading the banter between Sal, Gabi, and their classmates, I felt like I was listening to my own nieces and nephews. At first, the characters seem like they’re going to fall into traditional roles: Sal as the titular chosen one, Gabi as the too-smart-for-her-peers outcast, Yasmany as the bully and “big bad.” But here again Hernandez subverts expectations. Yes, Sal can do something remarkable (rip holes between universes and pulls things – and people – into his own), but he’s not a Chosen One. Nobody is spouting prophecies about what he can and will do, and even the most scientifically-adept characters in the book don’t know why Sal can do what he can do, or what effect it will have on the fabric of the multiverse. Gabi is smart and sassy and a little bit feared, but also well-liked by her peers. Yasmany starts out as the bully, but he’s neither a snob nor a jerk, and his character shows immediate depth that characters like Draco Malfoy only wish they could have exhibited in the first book of a series. Not only is Yasmany not the “big bad,” the book doesn’t have a “big bad” at all! It’s so refreshing to read a MG/YA book where the conflict is situational rather than staged, and where the tension comes from wondering what new situation is going to complicate things rather than wondering when the hero is going to punch the villain. Other than the initial Sal-Yasmany encounter, which never gets as violent as it threatens to, I’m not sure there’s a single fight scene in the entire book.Sal, Gabi, Yasmany, and their classmates enjoy school, are creative without being falsely eccentric, and are polite even when they’re arguing. Sal’s and Gabi’s parents are involved in their kids’ lives rather than absent, curious and supportive without being pushovers. The other authority figures (principal, custodian, teachers, nurses) are likeable and engaged rather than stern and unyielding roadblocks. Again, there’s that sense of family and community, with good (but not untroubled) relationships almost all around. And people actually apologize when they make mistakes or false assumptions.Anyone who has heard Carlos read any portion of this book at various conventions and reading programs over the past year or two will not be surprised at the amount of humor the book holds. Everything from slapstick to fart jokes to more intricate wordplay is present, but the characters never engage in humor that is denigrating, embarrassing or vulgar. Even the snark and sarcasm teens are known for is delivered gently. Finally, I have to acknowledge how empowering it has to be for Cuban-American kids to read this book and “hear” their own language, the beats and rhythms and slang. There were even bits of dialogue completely in Spanish with no direct translation into English. I don’t read or speak Spanish but was able to pick up context clues and go back later to look up translations, but I was happy those moments exist in the text, because they will reach the intended audience and make those young readers smile and feel represented. Also: the sequel has been announced, and I cannot wait to find out how Sal & Gabi Fix the Universe and what happens before they do.

I love this book. It has been a long time since I carried a big 400-page hardcover with me everywhere I went so I would have more time to read - but this book is that sort of book. It is also the sort of book that I wanted to slow down reading as I neared the end and realized how long I might have to wait to read more about Sal & Gabi and their parade of family and friends. One part Little Brother snark, one part Wrinkle in Time universe weirdness, two parts clever teens finding their way through the challenges life throws our way. I enjoyed learning more about Cuban-American culture. I particularly loved the way the author slowly reveals how things work in the universe he has created.Sal & Gabi will make you laugh out loud - and might even make you wipe away a tear or two. You are in for a great ride, be you an adult with a soft spot for middle-grade fiction (like me) or a kid looking for something new to read.

Sal arrives at his new school in Miami and ends up a frequent visitor in the principal's office. Gabi shows up in the office to represent Yasmany, the other student involved. Perpetual hijinx ensue with an undercurrent of sadness. Sal's mom died yet still "visits." Sal can open portals into other universes. Gabi is the only one outside his family who knows. Sal's school is a very special place where kids can pursue their passions and help each other. The Miami setting with Spanish speaking characters adds the perfect aura. This book is unforgettable. Luckily there will be a sequel. Thanks NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC. You have a winner!

Great book!! Fabulous author!! 😍

Sal didn't mean to punch a hole in the universe and put a dead chicken in Yasmany's locker.Oh, wait, yeah, he did.Meet Sal. He's a lot of things. The new kid. Cuban-American. Diabetic. Aspiring magician. Lover of Skittles. And he can access other dimensions. How did that happen? Well, let's just say it all started after his Mami Viva turned into Mami Muerta...Now meet Gabi. Student council president. Overachiever. Loves t-shirts with quotes and funky barrettes. School paper editor. Future lawyer. Sal's worst enemy turned bestie. How did that happen? Well, let's just say it took a little bit of breaking the universe...Sal and Gabi Break the Universe is a fun, fantastic adventure full of friendship, family, love, and a whole lot of yummy Cuban cooking. All of the characters are amazing and you can't help but love them. Yasmany, the school bully and receiver of the above dead chicken? You'll love him by the end of the book. Principal Torres, whose office Sal has ended up in every day of his first week at his new school? Wonderful and definitely deserves a raise. Papi and American Stepmom? You'll want them--along with all of Gabi's dads--to be your parents, too. It's basically a slice-of-life book, coupled with alternate realities that Sal can access, leading to wacky adventures for all. And, maybe, lead to a miracle or two.In addition, I want to make a quick note about Gabi, and something that endeared her to me. Though also Cuban-American and studies more than she breathes, she doesn't understand Spanish, leading to Sal to translate for her at times. I think that this is incredibly important for the Latino kids who weren't raised speaking Spanish for whatever reason (like, say, my kid brother, who is adopted from Guatemala and barely even knows Dora-level Spanish--not for a lack of trying on the part of our parents and myself). Not knowing Spanish doesn't make these kids any less Latino than their fluently bilingual peers, and highlights diversity of families and lifestyles.

The trilogy:1. The Thoughts of Wise Men (1903);2. A Circle of Reading (1906), first published in English in 1997 by Scribner under the title A Calendar of Wisdom; [Roger Cockrell]3. Wise Thoughts for Every Day, or For Every Day (1909), recently rediscovered in Russia and now published in English for the first time. [Peter Sekirin]Both Cockrell and Sekirin give a selection, not the entire text. The second, Circle of Reading, translated and selected by Roger Cockrell, was by far the largest of the three.I have just gotten both. The second in the trilogy (Cockrell) mixes comments by Tolstoy with quotes from his reading (Lichtenberg, Cicero, Angelus Silesius...).The third in the trilogy (Sekirin) gives Tolstoy's own thoughts, with few quotes from other authors. Tolstoy created thirty topics for the thirty days in the month (Greed and Wealth, Pride, Judgment and Punishment, There is No Evil...). He repeats those thirty topics each month with further thoughts. The Cockrell and the Sekirin come to roughly the same length.I'm glad to have both. Too soon to say, but at first glance I lean to the Cockrell for variety, although the thirty topics in the Sekirin look promising, and this was Tolstoy's third and final attempt at this sort of thing. If you like one you'll want the other.

I have had a copy of this book for years, and honestly I don't read it often enough. The days when I do remember to pick it up and look at the day's reading almost always work out to be better, whether because the reading cheers or inspires me, or it connects me to something else also of value. It's such a little thing and it does so much good. It's fun, too, because it is of course a product of a man of a certain time and place. So while some of the readings seem timeless in their wit, wisdom, and inspiration, others are absurd or even bizarre. Even those, however, give us something to think about. This is a book full of risks as well as rewards. It is not a book of safe generalities and platitudes.

This is an interesting little daily meditation book, a singular expression of many eternal/spiritual truths from diverse sources, seemingly distilled through personal experience and perhaps random inspiration of some kind. Some of his thoughts seem ‘dated’ now (for lack of a better term), others WAY ahead of their time, all thought provoking and grounding. The translation is not overly formal making it approachable.

Tolstoy was ahead of his time. While having real motivation for justice over corruption and mistreatment of those in his communities he really wasn't ( IMHO) an activist for government change as mush as he was an activist for spiritual change. Honest and uplifting.

Remembering Leo Tolstoy as He Would Wish to be RememberedNovember 20th, 2010, marks the 100 year anniversary of Count Leo Tolstoy's passing. Considering his international fame as one of the world's greatest, if not the greatest, writers of realistic fiction it is no surprise that there are planned numerous recognitions of his life and works around the world. But most of them, as it appears from doing a World Wide Web search, center on the two books which brought him his original recognition and fame, "War and Peace" and "Anna Karenina". Tolstoy clearly tells us himself that he wishes to be remembered instead for his moral, ethical and religious writings from his latter years, those being such titles as: "My Confession" and "What I Believe" (1884); "The Death of Ivan Ilyitch" (1887); "Resurrection" (1899); "Thoughts on God" (1903); "Critique of Dogmatic Theology" (1904); and "On Reason, Faith and Prayer" (1905) to name but a few of his some 90 penned volumes. These eventually got him excommunicated from the Russian Orthodox Church but in no way kept him from continuing the writing of similar writings. His own personal library at Yasnaya Polyana, now a museum, numbered some 22,000 books. He was a serious student of all of the world's major religions, both East and West, of the Orient and of the Occident. In 1893 Tolstoy published "The Kingdom of Go is Within You" which Mahatmas Gandhi read and was inspired by in his non-violent resistance to British colonial rule in India which in turn inspired our Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in his civil rights work here in America. That same year, 1893, the World Parliament of Religions met in Chicago at which Swami Vivekananda spoke on Sept. 11th capturing the attention of his audience with his message of loving respect between peoples of all faiths. This became America's introduction to Hinduism and the resulting media coverage of that event brought Tolstoy's attention to Vivekananda. Soon after Tolstoy's 1908 "Letter to a Hindu" was published in several newspapers in India a lively but short correspondence between Gandhi and himself was inspired. In their own time all four of these great men of thought and action were capturing the attention of the world and were having profound affects one upon the other. My own introduction to Tolstoy was indirect in that I saw a 1937 British made film based on one of his short stories, "Where Love Is, There God Is Also" which he wrote in 1885. That viewing was when I was about seven years old in 1949 or so. I can still remember details of that film as clearly today as if seen only days ago. I was of an atheistic mind at the time, a confirmed atheist even, as I was concerned about world peace and my perception of the different faith communities was that they kept themselves separate from each other and condemned each other. Knowing that was not the way to world peace I had dismissed all religion as false and worthless. World peace was primary to all other of my concerns. In spite of so firmly discounting all religion there was something captivating about Tolstoy's story crafting. The British film makers had been exceptionally faithful to the essence and impact of the original written version of Tolstoy's vision. There was something about that story that I wanted it to be real. Once I became a believer when I turned 18 the story came back to me as real as if I had been one or more of the characters in the film. It was not until that transforming moment that I learned that the film was based on a Tolstoy short story. I then became interested in Tolstoy himself and his other writings.Upon reading his 1908 "Letter to a Hindu" in which he quoted Krishna from the Hindu scriptures those same words from his 1885 short story title jumped out at me: "I tarry awhile from the turmoil and strife of the world. I will beautify and quicken thy life with love and with joy, for the light of the soul is Love. WHERE LOVE IS, there is contentment and peace, and where there is contentment and peace, THERE AM I, ALSO, in their midst." The "I" speaking here is God, not Krishna, as is the case in all other scriptures. The Prophet Founders of all the Revealed Religions are each the Mouthpieces of our Creator, the One and Same Creator. Replacing "am I" (the "I Am that I Am") with "is God" and we have the short story title, "Where Love Is, There God Is Also." This is a universal story; it is not exclusively a Christian story, though it is often read during the Christmas season. From Tolstoy's own pen the two books he would most like to be remembered for are, "Wise Thoughts for Every Day: On God, Love, Spirit and Living a Good Life" and "A Calendar of Wisdom: Daily Thoughts to Nourish the Soul Written and Selected from the World's Sacred Texts" both of which are only recently available in English. These were Tolstoy's last major works and he put an enormous amount of effort into these collections over a period of 15 years as stated by Peter Sekirin, the translator of both works. Researching and compiling these daily readings, one for every day of the year, gave Tolstoy a spiritual lift like no other before and once compiled he daily reread them himself the rest of his life for that same ethereal high. He recommends daily meditation readings for all people world wide. Multi-faith daily meditation books are almost common today but best I can figure Tolstoy was a first to compile the likes of them. His daily reading entry for November 20th, his eventual death day? In "Wise Thoughts for Every Day..." he wrote:"Everything good, even the smallest good act, takes effort. Nothing can stop you from making an effort to improve your life. Always remember this. We think of work as the things we can see with our eyes: building houses, plowing fields, feeding cattle. However, your only true work is invisible: it is improving your inner spirit."Though his selections are often from world scriptures and philosophers more often they are writings from his own thoughts. As I write this article on Veteran's Day, 2010, I turn to Tolstoy's selection for November 11th in "A Calendar of Wisdom...":"Moral perfection is the impossible goal, but moving to it is the law of human life. Some people say, `Man is selfish, greedy, and dissipated, and cannot be kind to other people.' This is not true. We can be good. Feel in your heart the kind of person you should be; this feeling will give you power. Outer consequences are not in our power to control; it is only possible to make an effort, and inner consequences always follow from our effort."On this Veteran's Day I reflect on my father, Rev. Donald Melvin Sterling, who served in the US Navy during WWII. That fact is the very reason I became so concerned about world peace at so early an age. World peace had become more important to me than the "Faith of my Father's Holy Faith" because of the hypocrisy I saw in so many so called "believers." That hypocrisy contradicted the world embracing love they professed. I did not see that contradiction in my father himself but rather in what seemed to me the vast majority of nearly everyone else. From Tolstoy's diary, which he kept most of his life we read for 24 January, 1909: "Yasnaya Polyana [...] I've just been reading FELLOWSHIP. It contains many good things. The Behai (Baha'i Faith) are very interesting. When I was out walking today I thought about two things: THE WISDOM OF CHILDREN, and about education - about the fact that as I was persuaded when young to direct all my energy to the bravado of hunting and war, so children can be persuaded to direct all their energy to the struggle against themselves, to the increase of love."We dare not discount The Wisdom of Children. As a child I saw the harm done in exclusive claims of truth but I did not feel free to express that insight to either adults or my peers. Thus I kept it to myself and, jokingly now, saw that I had become a "holier than thou atheist." The answer is to learn enough respect for each other to hear each other's inner most thoughts without condemnation, even with the youngest of children.Only then can we build the non-violent world people like Tolstoy, Vivekananda, Gandhi and King hoped for and worked for.Besides reading regularly from Confucian, Zoroastrian, Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish, Christian and Moslem texts and scriptures Tolstoy discovered late in his life the then still relatively new Revelation of Baha'u'llah, the Baha'i Faith, with its beginnings in 1844 in the Babi Faith. This was destined to happen as he had committed himself to seek out the wisdom of the world, near and far, new and ancient. In fact it was in 1844 at age 16 that he became a student of oriental languages. His encounter with the Baha'i Writings came much later, being in 1894. His interest in world religions was well known far and wide and a few early Baha'is either sent him Baha'i pamphlets or books or brought these to him in person. In 1902 Abdu'l-Baha, son of Baha'u'llah, Interpretor and Perfect Exemplar of the Faith, sent Mirza Aziz'u'llah Jadhdhab Khurasani to meet Count Leo Tolstoy and to bring him this message: "Act that your name may leave a good memory in the world of religion. Many philosophers have come, each one raising a flag, let us say five meters high. You have raised a flag ten meters high; immerse yourself in the ocean of unity, so that you may remain confirmed eternally."During that 1902 visit Tolstoy was asked what his opinion was concerning Baha'u'llah. With raised hands he replied: "How could I deny Him? [...] Obviously this Cause will conquer the whole world. I myself have already accepted Muhammad." Then he added: "Send me more writings." These statements did not, however, necessarily mean that he was declaring himself a member of the Baha'i Faith nor that he had converted to Islam. More than likely he did understand though that Baha'is accept all the Prophet Founders of all the major world religions as being inspired by the One and Same Universal Creator of all that is. He just was not quite ready to give this new faith his total embrace. As he studied it more he continued to like and agree with its teachings but on occasion found something he disagreed with and tried to discount it. Those moments never lasted long as he soon took up the further study of its Writings again and would make statements like: "Very profound. I know no other so profound." This vacillation continued thru his remaining eight years with each swing seeming to bring him closer to perhaps full acceptance. Of his own personal opinions he held them very strongly, sometimes too strongly. I believe he had sometimes become overly proud of his own power of reason and intellect and thus contradicting some of his own advice to others and to himself. Had he lived but only a few years longer and met a few more committed Baha'is he may well have declared himself a Baha'i, a faith committed to unity of thought and action within its own community, something not always easy to achieve or maintain but nonetheless understood by followers of Baha'u'llah as the only path to world peace and to the well being of all its people.I like to think that Leo's spirit sat with me in that theatre seat when I watched "Where Love Is, God Is" in my childhood with his knowing that I would eventually find the Baha'i Faith myself and embrace it. I believe he has embraced it in the next world. We live with our own convictions, me with mine, others with their own and there is no argument that can be made of it.As much as I feel to remember most every detail of that film seen some 60 years ago now I would still dearly love to see it again and share it with those closest to me in my life today. A long search for a copy of the film eventually tracked down perhaps the only remaining copy of it, now in the British Film Institute National Library & Archives in London. Only problem is this 1937 film is a 35mm nitrate print held in archival master status. It is too fragile to be viewed and a telecine transfer is very expensive which can only be undertaken on behalf of educational bodies with legitimate links to the material. It would be my hope that an interest to view again this film is not only personal with me but of enough greater interest to have one of the Tolstoy educational organizations take on the funding of this delicate and expensive transfer.Speaking of films there is a new one about Tolstoy's final two years, "The Last Station", with Christopher Plummer as Tolstoy, released just last year. Helen Mirren plays his wife, Sophia. I recommend it for its message that behind every great man there is an equally great woman. Helen Mirren plays that part superbly. Perhaps both Sophia and Helen knew that the Baha'i Faith is all about equality between women and men and about the unity of all of humanity more than Count Leo Tolstoy knew this himself. In closing here is one more page selection from "Wise Thoughts for Every Day" dated November 6th under the heading of Universal Love: "If you do not love people, your whole life becomes complex and difficult. If you begin to love people, everything in your life will become clear and easy. Without love, a person feels surrounded by enemies. Love unites him with all living creatures of the world, past, present, and future, and love unites him with God. The activity of people who do not understand the true meaning of life is always directed at the struggle of existence, acquiring more wealth and pleasure, and not at getting rid of their sufferings and preparing for eternal life. The more people are busy with this in their daily lives, the less time they will have for the only true pleasure man has, love. On day, somehow, we will stop the fighting, wars, and executions and start loving one another. Eventually that time will come because what originally was put into our souls was not hatred for others but love. Let us do everything we can to make this time arrive as soon as possible."May we all remember Count Leo Tolstoy as someone who inspired us to do our own independent search after truth and once found to make it real and to live it to its fullest.David Neyman Sterling749 Hawthorne Ave. E.Saint Paul, Minnesota 55106-1908(651) 771-6933November 11th, 2010

I have spent several years reading the Bible daily and various "thoughts of the day" pamphlets that you get through church. At least where I am in my spiritual development (at this time, looking inward for God vs. externally and learning about other philosophies such as Buddism to see what insights I can gain), I find this to be very rewarding and inspirational. I particularly like that Tolstoy used Christianity as the basis but also looked to other philosophies, which he includes.I bought this book as an afterthought when I purchased Tolstoy's The Kingdom of God is Within Us. I'm so glad that I bought it because it's easy to pick up and read each day, and I'm getting a lot out of it. The Kingdom book is more intensive read in terms of actual reading so other books have caught my interest first. This book is one of them.

Great excellent !!! Timeless collection of worksFrom the outstanding author and philosopher great every day thoughts for you Dailey

First, this book on international style will never replace a teacher. If you want to learn international style, give yourself about a year with a private teacher. If you're a couple, figure 2 years. It is impossible to learn to dance from a book. Footsteps show alignment only. Books do not teach technique, and international style is all about technique. If you want to learn to dance socially, take private ballroom dance lessons with a good studio. This book is not for you.A piece of advice, Forget about group lessons. No one learns to dance in a group. This book is very clear and written for someone who knows how to dance.Last, you need to learn amalgamations, i.e., continuity. Learning one step at a time doesn't work. This book will tell you which figure precedes or follows a given figure.

Modern Ballroom Dancing: All the Steps You Need to Get You Dancing is an accurate title for a great little book. A dancer who studies and practices what this offers will indeed be dancing soon. It is good for steps but needs follow up with a coach for body positioning to help make the dancing more comfortable.

I purchased this book to compliment my dance instruction. Being that I take lessons in Japan, I needed a book, in English, which would reinforce and further explain what was being taught to me in class. I have found it a very useful book. However, this is not a book for a beginning dancer! The explanations and footwork patterns are detailed, but if you have no experience with ballroom dancing, the figures and explanations will mean very little to you. Some of the more complicated steps do not have foot diagrams, which would have been helpful. All and all, an excellent book!

This is a good book to summarize all steps for many popular dances. My only problem is it does not have step graph for every steps. Only about half of them are illustrated. One step graph wins thousands of words.

I have both the Victor Silvester book and Alex Moore's ISTD ballroom manual. I personally find the ISTD manual more compact, and a lot better organized. It is a little more expensive than Silvester, and it also has no pictures, but it is much more useful in my opinion. The Victor Silvester book is a ballroom instructor's manual with pictures, and the reader's understanding of the material will be exponentially proportional to his prior experience. That is, the beginners will not find it useful at all, while the intermediate and advanced dancers will be able to learn quite a bit from it. The pictures and figures are more like eye candy, as they are taken from dance competitions. They are not used to illustrate the steps.Although the book covers all ballroom steps from beginner to gold, it doesn't tell you which one is which. Also, it only covers up to latin bronze steps, and does not explain essential concepts such as Cuban motion and samba bounce. Unlike the other manuals, the Victor Silvester book also go over the basic steps for Viennese Waltz and (huh huh ...) disco. These steps are fairly basic. If the user are already at the level at which he can learn from the book, I doubt these steps would be too challenging. Also, a word of warning for the prospective dancers. I have seen (and met) a lot of people who try to learn from the book directly, only to be discouraged by the less than desirable results. What a lot of these books won't tell you, or at least convey effectively, are the fundamental aspects of partnered dancing, such as posture, communication, movement, and body connections. These aspects have to be taught and shown by a qualified instructor, because these points can't simply be put in words and are fundamental to all partnered dancing.

This is a pretty good book for anyone who's currently taking lessons in International-style dancing. It goes through all 10 dances used in International Rhythm and Smooth competition. The author presents about 12 or more variations in each dance. There are foot diagrams for about half the variations. He details the footwork (written), contrary body movement, timing, sway and amount of turn. All of the photos are of competitors at a dance event so they're not helpful if you're trying to learn how any figure looks. I don't think it's a book to buy if you're starting to learn how to dance but if you're already taking lessons, it's a good book to reinforce what you're learning. American-style is not covered at all.

I've been ballroom dancing for quite a while, and I bought this book in order to learn some more dance steps over and beyond the basics. I found the descriptions and diagrams IMPOSSIBLE to understand, and the steps I could figure out ended up being out of place among the steps that I usually dance. I think this book is only good if you're a dance teacher who is used to reading steps in a certain format and can translate them into motion. If you're a beginner, this book will do you NO GOOD!

MODERN BALLROOM DANCING has been valuable to me in improving my skills in those dances with which I was already familiar. The usefulness seemed to have been in direct proportion to what I knew before reading the book. It has not been very helpful in learning new dances. The text includes several dazzling photos of competitive dancers in action.

From the Inside Flap

ontemporary art and culture by one of the most original, critical and analytical minds of this century. Illuminations includes Benjamin's views on Kafka, with whom he felt the closest personal affinity, his studies on Baudelaire and Proust (both of whom he translated), his essays on Leskov and on Brecht's Epic Theater. Also included are his penetrating study on "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction," an illuminating discussion of translation as a literary mode, and his thesis on the philosophy of history. Hannah Arendt selected the essays for this volume and prefaces them with a substantial, admirably informed introduction that presents Benjamin's personality and intellectual development, as well as his work and his life in dark times.Reflections the companion volume to this book, is also available in Schocken paperback.

The book was missing several chapters: it only had 2 essays by Benjamin and it was supposed to have 10 or so, and was only 109 pages as opposed to about 280. Specifically, it did not have Work and Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction.

This was a pretty excellent (and challenging) survey of Benjamin's work, with included pieces mostly concerning storytelling and particular literary figures (e.g., Kafka, Proust, Leskov). I'd say this collection is particularly helpful in that it proceeds, as I read it, thematically. The editor's introductory piece isn't really worth reading--mostly just a reflection on Benjamin's "continuing importance", pretty standard (though I will say his criticisms of Benjamin, like his reluctance to give in to Scholem, amount more to complaints than critiques). In contrast, I found Arendt's essay incredibly enlightening. She relates not only much of the content of Benjamin's thought, but offers insight into his personal life (e.g., his experience in the Parisian Arcades, his collective impulses) that assists greatly in understanding the experience motivating some of Benjamin's analyses (e.g., of the crowd, of the collector, of the character of the flaneur). In some retellings, as in his chronic financial/employment troubles or the unfortunate coincidences leading to his suicide, a sense of melancholy or "bad luck" is almost palpable, particularly given Arendt's close relation to Benjamin. As for the essays themselves, anyone who has read Benjamin is aware of how challenging the prose (if we may call it that) is. As Arendt notes in her introduction, Benjamin is a poetic thinker, and tends both to assume a fair amount of foreknowledge and employ sophisticated (and often extended) figurative devices, e.g., simile, to relate his points. Contrast this with the geometric prose of Spinoza and other modern philosophers, with their numbered axioms, definitions, propositions, etc. In his essay on Proust, for example, Benjamin likens the weight of scent in memory to the weight of the fisherman's net by which he gauges his catch, and sentences to the physical labor required to haul it up. There is also some evidence of his on-again-off-again Marxist tendencies (which embarrassing fact, combined with his ambivalence between this commitment and Zionism, is acknowledged in the introduction to the collection), as in his late essay on art modified by mechanical reproduction, plus the more obvious shoehorning of concepts like "class struggle" and "proletarianization". Nevertheless, this is a fantastic collection which ought to attract both old and new readers of Benjamin--I know I'll be buying Reflections, Illuminations' spiritual companion, and at least some of his standalone work.

This edition of Illuminations is incomplete. It only contains three essays ("Unpacking My Library," "Task of the Translator" and "The Storyteller"), none of which are Benjamin's most well-known. Spend the extra five bucks to get the Schocken Books edition: Illuminations: Essays and Reflections.

Walter Benjamin put everything he knew into everything he wrote. It all resonates. This makes for challenging reading - at times, it seems like what he is saying is simply too much at a tilt with everything one thinks one knows to seem comprehensible. Then, suddenly, one tilts, and the extraordinary reach, eloquence and power of this man's reading hits home. Benjamin is difficult in the only legitimate way - because what he is trying to say can be said no other way.

Good selection of Walter B's between-the-wars brilliant insights. In clear translations. Highly recommended to those interested in memory, Proust, and insights into a troubled political and social environment

I ordered this version, but instead received the version with the orange and white cover. Be careful!

The translation by Harry Zohn must be acknowledged as a masterpiece. Fitting in a work that contains Benjamin's essay "The task of the translator", I wonder if our author wrote in German as beautifully as has been rendered into English. If so Walter Benjamin must be counted as a great literary mind besides one of the finest intellectuals. The introduction by Hanna Arendt crowns the jewel of a book that speaks to everyman and for all times.

A good view of a past that never became present. Benjamin's self-martyrdom might be more significant than his writings since people generally tend to prefer melodrama to sociology these days. Unless you have to read this for class, I recommend you read more contemporary theorists.

A collection of negotiation case studies, some set on the world stage, but others set at a much more intimate level. Mnookin's gift is to find the common threads that defy the scale differences, distilling a subtlety distinct cut on interest-based negotiation. The political case studies are good, but the real value in this excellent book lies in the detailed discussion and perceptive analysis of cases of employee representation vs. management, a divorce, and sibling disagreement over inheritance. Each case illustrates the value of focusing on interests rather than pointless positions of so-called principle. How often have I seen the outcome of "it's the principle" negatively impact people's lives, more often than not following some pyrrhic "victory" in a negotiation of some sort? Politicians of all stripes, managers and trade unionists too, as well as warring spouses or siblings - read, digest, benefit.

Overall it is a good book about the theme in question, however it is more about examples of specific situations than actual a guidance on how to deal with the situation in a generic form.I do have enjoyed reading it and even in the format in question it has provided grat insights about people's nature when negotiating in very difficult situations.

I was looking for a book about negotiations when the other party is considered as evil and unreliable, as it happens between political or international negotiations. The other books were always about business, Mnooking's book is very well written and covers those areas that are not only related to business, where the negotiations are not always about money or a contract. The style is clear and enjoyble. I highly recommend this book.

I purchased this book in the hopes of learning practical techniques to improve negotiation skills. It proved to be more of a compendium about the history of various groups which was not what I bought the book for. This book was a waste of time. There are plenty of better books out there on this topic.

Perhaps I expected more absolute technique rather than an exploration of how an individual or group can cripple the effort of negotiation by demonizing a participant. A good book with interesting insights. Enjoyed the details of the historical examples and felt the author had an interesting humility -- he didn't fall into the error of believing he would have done better simply because he now has historical perspective.

A friend recommended this and I am so glad. Mnookin writes with personality, a lively treatment filled with actual stories of difficult situations solved or not solved by negotiation, some familial and others large scale (i.e., Mandela's decision to work with the South African power brokers).

This book begin with a analisys of important negotiations in very dificult perceptions of the paties of the other side in order to get an agreement and goes to more near cases as famiar cases. Recomended.

This book is great, I had to read it for school. I am happy that it was required because this isn't a book that I would typically read, but it was a very good book. It has a lot of lessons in it and will teach you how to build, grow or for some to even begin with negotiating.
