Feast from the Mideast: 250 Sun-Drenched Dishes from the Lands of the Bible (Cookbooks), by Faye Levy

From Publishers Weekly

Delivering another winner, Levy (1,000 Jewish Recipes; Faye Levy's International Vegetable Cookbook) turns her attention to the Middle East, where she lived for many years, and draws not only on her heritage but also on the customs and traditional variations that shape the region. Distinguishing a dish as Egyptian or Syrian rather than Persian, for example, she takes home cooks on a culinary odyssey, explaining the history and geography of each region. Starting with the Middle East pantry and carefully offering substitutes where necessary, she addresses the specialized ingredients that the user may not be familiar with. Each recipe is carefully described with its provenance and attributes from the traditional main course, such as Yemenite Beef Soup with Curry Spices and Potatoes ("the centerpiece of the traditional Yemenite diet"); the rich, sweet flaky Nut-filled Baklava ("the first records we have come from Syria near the Turkish border"); and the ubiquitous Middle Eastern Diced Salad, which has a different name in each country. Several recipes are given new twists, while never deviating from the intrinsic substance at the heart of each dish, to take advantage of today's health concerns. Interspersed with panels that inform and amuse (as when Levy, as a budding cook, describes exploding an eggplant), the book concludes with a chapter covering the basics, from blanching almonds to making vegetable stock and a selection of suggested menus. Wide in breadth and scope with a thorough attention to detail, Levy's foray into this area of cuisine so plentiful in history results in an important volume rich in content and knowledge. Faye Levy is an established cookbook writer who is offering a book on Middle Eastern cooking which closely parallels the range of Claudia Roden's classic book on Middle Eastern food. One's choice between the two will depend largely on where your interest lies.To those new to Middle Eastern cuisine, it can be described briefly as being based on olive oil and clarified butter; yogurt and soft cheeses; citrus, nuts and seeds; rice and bulgar wheat; honey and dried fruits; spice mixes; flatbreads; and eggplant and leafy green vegetables. Beans are common and used more creatively than in many cuisines. Wine and vinegar use is very small. Pork and cured pork products make no appearance at all. Breads and pasta are limited in variety, although those which do appear are distinctive. New world vegetables appear, but mostly as fresh rather than cooked ingredients. Fin fish and squid appear, but bivalves are uncommon.Levy and Roden concentrate on different geographical boundaries, with Roden including and Levy excluding North Africa west of Egypt, although Levy still includes reference to famous Morrocan features such as couscous and tangines. Levy identifies the primary regions of Middle Eastern cookery as the Eastern Mediterranean (Turkey, Levant, Egypt), Iran (Persia) and the arabian peninsula and Iraq.Levy discusses very little of the historical background but does discuss some of the says the cuisine has been influenced by India and how it has in turn influenced Europe, especially the Balkans; however, Roden goes into this in more detail. Levy's wraps her discussion in more of a linguistic focus, being careful to give the various different names of dishes for different nationalities. Both books divide the dishes into many similar categories. To Roden's sixteen (16), Levy gives us these fourteen (14):AppetizersSaladsSoupsBrunch and other Fast DishesSeafoodPoultryMeatLegumesVegetablesGrainsPastaSauces and RelishesBreads and Savory PastriesCakes and CookiesLevy includes some modern western interpretations of classic dish styles, while Roden appears to focus on the authentic modern and historical cuisine of the region. Levy always presents just the basic dish. Roden typically gives variations on basic dishes based on how the dish may have been treated in different parts of the Middle East. On examining recipes from the two books for the same dish, I believe there is little to choose in the clarity of presentation, although I would give a slight not to Roden for spelling out the regional variations. Both writers were born in the Middle East and both appear to be thoroughly in touch with their subject. Neither is here just for a brief visit. Both have also produced books on Jewish cuisine, so it is not surprising that these volumes concentrate much more on the Muslem cuisine than on any Jewish dishes.Levy includes a chapter on menus for entertaining and give a somewhat more detailed discussion of spice mixes. Levy also includes recipes for pantry items such as stocks. I recommend anyone wishing to make stocks for these recipes stick with a good French, Culinary Institute, or Cooks Illustrated Best Recipe source.Levy's book has 380 pages for $30 and Roden has 490 pages for $35. If I were picking one book, I would take Roden based on the deeper historical perspective, the more interesting geographical range, and the (I suspect) more valid separation of Turkish cuisine from that of the Levant. If you were primarily interested as a source for entertaining and most especially interested in the Arab cuisine, then Levy's book may give you more of what you want. Both are superior books on a regional cuisine. I give it only four stars because it did not teach me anything really new about cooking and cuisine. You may have a different background, so I leave that open to your judgement. I agree with another reviewer that the book did not entirely fit it's subtitle as sun-drenched is not discussed and the range exceeds the lands of the Bible, but I don't hold it against the author.

I love this book! The author, Faye Levy, offers the readers an excellent overview of the Middle Eastern cuisine, along with interesting recipes for the dishes that hail from different countries in the region.

My food-obsessed son gave me this cookbook one Christmas. It was a gift to the whole family. Now, in addition to our standard Thanksgiving dinner, we have a collection of favorites from Feast from the Mideast that we prepare together when we want a meal that lives up to the word "feast". We are most impressed with the Chicken Bulgar Pecan patties. My daughter is a big fan of the desserts. I find them unnecessary, as I am quite satisfied by this cuisine which relies heavily on olive oil, lemon juice and lots of vegetables.

Great step by step way to build any volunteer group.

Great book, very insightful. Lots of tips for building a volunteer teem.

I still remember the day youth ministry got fun.It was during a meeting with my adult leaders in my rookie year in youth ministry. As we went through our upcoming youth ministry gathering, I remember sitting there thinking, "You guys are fun. You make this job fun. I cannot do it without you."Ever since then, I've greatly valued adult leaders. Yet, like so many other youth workers, I've found it difficult to recruit and train them. For that reason, I was excited to read Building Your Volunteer Team by Mark DeVries and Nate Stratman. The underlying premise of Building Your Volunteer Team is that most youth workers struggle with building their team because they simply do not invest enough time in doing so. Mark and Nate remind us that "creating a habit requires sustained investment day in and day out for several weeks." In Building Your Volunteer Team, they attempt to help youth workers create such a habit, challenging them to spend one to two hours a day for 30 days focused on this important part of youth ministry. They're so confident in their methods that the book even comes with a money back guarantee from Ministry Architects. To be sure, Building Your Volunteer Team is a book filled with wisdom. It reminds youth workers that "faithful ministry is almost never meant to be a do-it-yourself project. It's a do-it-together project." It also offers practical, step-by-step instructions for building your volunteer team. To help you do so, the book is packed with resources you can use. The ones found in the appendix are, even by themselves, worth the price of the book.Because of how practical Building Your Volunteer Team is, this is the book I wish I would have had my rookie year in youth ministry when I realized how important adult leaders were to the success of ministry but had no idea how to build a quality team. It's also the book I wish I would have had each time I started a new youth ministry position and once again found myself having to build a team from scratch. Even now, as a veteran youth worker with a fairly well-established volunteer team, it's the book I have and will continue to use both to remind myself of the importance of strengthening my team and, more importantly, to actually do so.I encourage you to do the same.

I was a youth pastor in some form for 13 years. For the last 7 years I have been a solo pastor of churches in Colorado and South Dakota. The last three school years I have been assisting with our youth ministry program while serving as the pastor. If I were to jump back into youth ministry again, I would grab a hold of this book and run with it, implementing the 30 day plan at some point very early in my ministry at my new church. This book is written by the fine folks at Ministry Architects, a wonderful, thoughtful, research based operation that offers the best in consulting ministry for churches striving to build and grow their youth program. My experience with this organization was very affirming and helpful in my ministry. This book will be a great resource for people eager to build a team of youth ministers, and who at the same time are unsure on how to accomplish that lofty goal of building a ministry team. Each week has a particular segment of this job to work on, and each day has steps to take in order to build the team in a month. By the end of the month, you should see progress. The back cover guarantees the process. If you purchase the book and don't like the results after thoughtfully implementing the steps, simply return the book and get reimbursed. This book needs to be on every pastor's bookshelf, and every youth minister's bookshelf as well. It is just that helpful of a book.

There are two tasks often landing on the youth director/pastor’s job description many would say they wouldn’t miss: recruiting and fundraising. In third place would be a “lock-in” or maybe it is first place . . . but that’s another discussion.Mark DeVries and Nate Stratman have lived in the world of recruiting volunteers and put together a great road map for building the best of volunteer teams. The book is laid out in short, quickly readable chapters meant to be implemented within 30 consecutive days. There is even an attached guarantee: work the plan and be successful OR Ministry Architects will refund you the price of the book and $20 credit toward a downloadable resource. They have a plan and they stand by it.This “no-excuse,” momentum-driven plan is attractive because it is rhythmic. It calls the leader to be active through invitation but also take time for reflection and even “balcony” time where one gets more of an “aerial” view of the process on the ground. The samples given throughout the book and appendix make this book even more valuable. As one who has recruited for many decades I am grateful to see a guide in print to not only to motivate me to more excellence but others as well. Thank you Mr. DeVries and Mr. Stratman, for an accessible and bite-size strategy. I may take recruitment off my “dislike” list.

I cut my teeth on Clarence Larkin's Dispensational Truth and his other books 36 years ago. The Spirit World set the bar concerning the doctrines of Satan, angels, Nephilim, and other supernatural entities. Although he wrote in the era of 1918-1924, he was ahead of his time. Most of the Bible prophecy charts today are patterned after his original work.

I found this book so wonderful for several reasons. It reads easily. Doesn't seem dated at all (He wrote this in early 20th century). It rocks that he did all of his own drawings / diagrams. It has been researched to great extent without coming out boring at all. Not a thick book...I finished in a day and evening. The first time I read through it, I did so without my Bible. After that, I used it with my Bible (with Study Guide). The book enhanced the Bible and didn't change the Bible's contents but it made it even more interesting and easier to understand. Love this book and just received 2 of Clarence Larkin's other books. I will start them up after the Holidays are over. What a joy to read and so much research he must have done on the topics. Chapters are easy to follow and well divided. What a blessing I consider it to be for anyone who is hungry to read and understand as much as possible about the Bible. You won't be disappointed.

REALL SCOOP ON SPIRITUAL WORLD - NOT A LIE BUT ALL FROM BIBLE BASED TRUTH

I really liked this book. Larkin cites a verse (usually several) for everything that he states. You may not agree with everything, but it would be extremely beneficial to you whatever your theological views are. He writes gently, but with conviction, leaning on the "scripture of truth" rather than his "own understanding."

All of Clarence Larkins books are excellent material for Bible students and teachers, I just read the Kindle edition of this book and will be ordering all of his hardcover books and The Book of Charts from larkinestate.com

This is a clear explaination of the invisable world using examples from the Bible. If you are really interested in this subject also read Timaeus and Critus by Plato and "Earth's Earliest Ages" by Rev. G. H.Pember. I cannot find it again but "On the Origins of H-ll" by William Law also has to do with the interface between the Spirit World and the material World. Also see "Demonology I & II" by Rev. Lester Summeral. "Setting the Captives Free" by Dr. Rebecca Brown is also good. I have helped with exorcisums which are physically dangerous. Be careful. Kent J. Nauman MD

awesome this book will show you just how real evil and good spirits really are.Joel

Mr. Larkin has written one of the most complete commentaries on the spirit world. What are angels? what is Hell? are there angels in a place waiting for judgement. Amazon Best Sellers Rank:

#999,326 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This book has some nifty ideas and recipes, so it's a shame how many typos and mistakes it's riddled with. In fact, the missing and scrambled letters make a lot of gibberish at times, which has made me highly reluctant to trust the recipes. For instance, at location 1371, we have "10 (10 inch) tortilla chips" (I THINK it should be just "tortillas," because the recipe is to make chips). At location 1578, we have (toppings): "chopped dried fruit toasted nuts almond bridle chips flaked coconut, mini peanut butter pieces red and green sprinkles" [1 comma for the whole load, and I'm not sure what "bridle" is, except for the horse headgear].

I am always looking for ideas I can use for gifts. Living in the desert in NM it is not always easy to obtain unusual ingredients. I found these recipes used things available in local grocery stores. A good selection of ideas. One I had to find was a surprise basket for a new mother. A few little things to pamper her, like a good relaxing tea that is out of the ordinary. Or something like a bath salts that was relaxing.

I use these recipes for camping - I don't use a jar, I use cook bags (plastic bags made to withstand heat without releasing toxic chemicals into your food.) In most, I just add water, some I need to bake over the fire, some I just need to shake and let it sit.

I am a very crafty person. I always enjoy reading new books and getting new ideas on fun things to make.
