David McCraw has worked at the New York Times (NYT) since 2002. With a background in journalism, he's also a lawyer employed as Deputy General Counsel of the New York Times.McCraw recalls lawsuits faced by the NYT since his employment, but the focus is on the last two years under the Trump administration. This book is not to slam Trump. McCraw is a self-described "raving Moderate." He slams Democrats as well. He describes Hillary Clinton as someone who "had hostility to openness" (89) and Barack Obama's administration as one that was "more aggressive than any prior administration in prosecuting government workers accused of unauthorized disclosures" (111), perhaps because of the 2013 Edward Snowden scandal. What McCraw does describe are the many threatened lawsuits from Trump since his presidency, almost all of them accusing the NYT of libel when it's nothing more than Trump not liking the criticisms in the articles. Libel must be proven as made in malice and be untrue facts, not opinions. What Trump doesn't like about him in the media, he immediately labels as "fake news." McCraw claims the NYT may make mistakes in its reporting, and then publish an apology, but it will not intentionally publish false stories and disinformation.McCraw writes well and I find the narrative flows easily. Perhaps McCraw wrote this book (which, I'm sure, Trump will not like and sue him for libel, again) to justify why the NYT does not write positively of Trump. Compared to Bush43 and Obama before him, no other 21st century American president has disparaged the press as much s Trump has, and often because he doesn't like anything bad or negative published about him. He cites too many incidents in this book, including the repeated tactic of using secret service employees to force certain journalists out of press briefings, and Trump rallying his supporters to attack reporters as enemy of the people. The Trump administrations thrives on secrecy, and the more the government withholds, the more journalists and the public will want to pry out the truth to the public.McCraw's exacerbated tone is evident in Chapter 6, "Us vs Us" and continues in subsequent chapters as the proliferation of fakes news is making its way around social media and people don't always know that the stories they are reading are fake. His exacerbation often turns to dry sarcasm, and he cites Facebook's lax search for the truth as part of the problem. The book is timely, as Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has recently mentioned reconsidering the 1964 Supreme Court NYT vs Sullivan decision, in which a defendant must prove malice when suing for defamation. If this decision is overturned, Trump and his administration could sue more easily and win. This is something to ponder.

Considering that McCraw became known to most of us after writing a "lawyer letter" to Trump's attorneys that went viral, it's tempting to chalk this up as another anti-Trump screed that can be easily ignored by his supporters and trumpeted (if not read) by his detractors. That would be a mistake. What McCraw has written instead is an informative, enlightening, nuanced, and entertaining description of the role of the First Amendment in our government and culture. As an attorney, McCraw recognizes the difference between legal writing and narrative writing, and he pokes fun at himself and the legal profession in making this point while ensuring that his narrative is clear, direct, and easy to read. His focus is on telling stories that highlight his points, and given his work with the NYT there are lots of stories to share. He reviews not only many of the challenges with Trump's attacks on the press, but also the role and importance of "leakers," his frustration with Obama's crackdown on these leakers (in this sense, Obama comes across almost as poorly as Trump), the story behind the Harvey Weinstein reporting, kidnappings in foreign countries, challenges with the Freedom of Information Act, and more. Concepts that are likely dry and tedious in law school are brought to life in real-world situations where the First Amendment matters, sometimes to the point of literal life and death. At the book's heart, as McCraw affirms, is a passion for the First Amendment and the need for it to exist in a democracy. Throughout the book, the real heroes are the journalists who risk their lives in standing up to authoritarian governments and placing themselves in war zones to report their stories. These individuals demonstrate that the First Amendment is worth dying for.McCraw closes the book by noting that it's not enough to support the First Amendment, but that we must all search for the truth so we can make informed decisions. The founding fathers developed their constitutional system through the belief that it would succeed only if citizens could distinguish truth from lies. This is why Trump's attacks on "fake news" and calling the media "the enemy of the people" is particularly alarming. As McCraw states, "The First Amendment story is, in the end, now about law but about hearts and minds. It doesn't really matter how much freedom journalists have if no one believes them. A discredited press plays no role in shaping democracy and holding power accountable." This is a role the Founding Fathers recognized as imperative, and we should as well. McCraw shows us why.

Deputy general counsel of the New York Times writer David E. McCraw gives us a firsthand account of fighting for the free press and the First Amendment in the Age of Trumpism when DJT is at constant war with liberal democracy and the press-specifically The New York Times.McCraw warns we live in a time where a significant portion of the population has an appetite for a totalitarian joke monster: “Now we live in a time when the president demands that laws be changed to rein in First Amendment freedoms and denounces the press as the enemy of the people, a stain on society, traffickers in ‘fake news.’ The problem is not so much that he says all of that; the problem is how well it plays, delighting crowds that, in a frenzy, turn to jeer the assembled press-corps covering the event.”McCraw in this book has waged war against “alternative facts.” He wants to win the hearts and minds of the American people by waking up their passion for the First Amendment by showing the legal battles The New York Times has been fighting--and fighting still--against Trump and his henchmen. We must not, McCraw urges, become numb to the repetition of evil until it numbs us, becoming the “banality of evil,” a phrase McCraw borrows from Hannah Arendt throughout the book.In many ways, Truth in Our Times is a love letter to the First Amendment. McCraw argues persuasively that we should not take it for granted: “The First Amendment is not really dead but it will live long only if the American people fall in love with it again. It is no effortless romance. It requires hard work.”Indeed, McCraw and the good journalists of The New York Times should be applauded for doing the hard work to keep their love of the First Amendment alive.

This is the Anne Neville volume in Aya Kanno's amazing REQUIEM OF THE ROSE KING. Anne Neville was the daughter of the Earl of Warwick, famously entitled "The Kingmaker", who supported the House of York first, then shifted to the House of Lancaster in England's wars of the Roses, eventually dying in battle against the House of York at Barnet in 1471. Warwick used his daughter (that was normal for nobles and kings!) for political purposes, and unwittingly misled Richard to the mistaken belief that Anne did not love him. Anne, initially married to Edward of Lancaster, is now a widow.Somewhat as in Shakespeare's RICHARD III, Act 1, Richard woos Anne and marries her. Here, his reason for doing so is .. well, I won't spoil it. There is then a jump of several years to about 1477-1478. Anne and Richard are married with a son, but there is no love in their marriage, and all love in him is dead; he thinks so too. He is now frighteningly cold, even demonic; cold and unaffectionate to his son. Aya Kanno had built up our sympathy for him in his loneliness, terror of being found out, and his inability to accept his body and his sexuality, in her previous volumes. He is a combination of cold ruthless power with underlying terror.Witchcraft moves center stage: and the chief witch is Jane Shore, who becomes the king's mistress, and weaves a great miasma of dark power. She is in many ways the dark witch in the forest with which Richard's paranoid mother had terrified him as a child.Anne Neville is the only likable woman in REQUIEM, in any volume. The others are hard and ruthless (Lancastrian Queen Margaret d'Anjou), scheming and lying (Yorkist Queen Elizabeth), empty-headed and manipulative (Isabella, Anne's sister), or terrifyingly paranoid (Duchess Cecily of York) who hates her son Richard and has told him since childhood that he is the Devil's child.

Wow! So much happens in this volume. We jump ahead in time quite a bit and a lot of major changes are being put in motion. There's not a lot of happiness, but there is brooding, witches, curses and a signficant uptick in naked women. One heck of a cliffhanger on that last page tho, can't wait for volume 9!

Immaculate quality and fast recieval. Only problem is next novel doesnt come out till JANUARY 2016 OTL

A BEAUTIFUL and enigmatic set of characters rewriting history! I am in LOVE

It looks good and new. Like I bought it at Barnes & Noble.

With Volume 8, we have moved past the death of Warwick the Kingmaker and the battle of Tewksbury. The throne of England is stable, for now, with Richard's brother Edward IV on the throne. Kanno gets a bit fanciful in this volume, imagining that one of the beauties of the time and mistress to the King, Jane Shore, was actually a witch or alchemist interested in feminism and mischief. It's a bit of a stretch, to be sure, but then this is a manga version of British history that enjoys its fantastical elements.Story: Richard has killed Warwick and the throne is secure. But he was also complicit in the death of his beloved Henry. Now, cold inside and feeling like the only thing left to cling to is the York family, Richard is fully loyal to his brother, Edward IV, and willing to do whatever his brother asks, as long as it will ensure York supremacy. Anne, daughter of Warwick, meanwhile, is heartbroken over the loss of her father. As Anne's sister (now married to prince George) conspires to raise their position in face of Warwick's humiliating loss, Anne herself is sick with grief that her beloved Richard killed her father. As Jane Shore weaves her spell over a weakening Edward IV, Richard and the Duke of Buckingham work behind the scenes to save the throne. The art is, as ever, quite beautiful. What Ikeda did with the French monarchy with Rose of Versailles, Kanno certainly does with the otherwise dowdy Yorks and Lancasters. All the melodrama, histrionics, and over-the-top machinations of a josei/shoujo drama are intact. But at the heart, there is a lot to learn here about what really happened in medieval England. Although Kanno very loosely follows history (and certainly Richard wasn't intersex and witches didn't cast spells on kings), there are historical facts intact.I greatly enjoy each volume but find I like to keep a Wikipedia page open so I can know the real story behind the fanciful. It's a great way to appreciate Kanno's storytelling but still be able to distinguish between fact and fiction of these historical figures. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

I am a sketcher, and I feel anyone who does sketch would benefit from this book. However, I guess I didn't realize the size of the book is kinda small. But, I'm sure you can learn from it. Very well illustrated.

This is a well-written, thoughtful instruction book that offers practical advice and demonstrations. I love the size of the book and the spiral binding. It's easy to throw it in my drawing bag and take it with me.

Gifted it to my niece. She loves it and now has a great new hobby! Sketching!

I was expecting a standard size book, its more of a 5x8 sizematerial is good and I enjoyed the information

I love the exercises in the book. I enjoy the way it is illustrated. It really helped to supplement a class I took.

This is a good book on basic methods of drawing and art. This is an additioon to my library and to be shared with my grandkids.

I enjoy the"Bible" series of Art related books. They have good practical ideas and explain in vocabulary easy to follow.
