Well the book itself is wonderful. I have almost completed my first item for the book. But I must give you a warning.... my book is missing pages 65 thru 80. Of course I purchased this in May but I am just now realizing the book has a problem and the time limit to return or exchange has passed. Please always check your books when they arrive to be sure you have received all its content. Very disappointed.

As you can see I do buy all the adorable books here and this one is so adorable and as the cover say it's a lunch time project and you'll have some darling things to give to your friends and families. I have a friend that collect bee things so guess what she will be receiving for ever and also Christmas's from now on.. :)Dala

My bookshelves are filled with beautifully written and wonderfully informative books on everything yoga. Some would think I have all the books I could ever possibly need or want on the subject of yoga. Not so. I am pretty excited about this new book - Science of Yoga - by Ann Swanson. It's the kind of book that those new to yoga and those who have practiced for years will want to have as a resource - a book they will refer to again and again. The book is brilliantly laid out and very impressive in its scope. Anatomy and physiology has been simplified and broken down to make it user friendly and understandable for virtually anyone. It's fact filled and food for the curious mind. It's the kind of book that can be consumed in bits and pieces but I recommend reading the whole book first so you don't miss any of the great information that this author shares. Anatomy and physiology is just the beginning of this book. It offer's so much more. Pictures clearly showing various asanas/poses in seated, standing, inversions and floor that depict joints, the muscles engaged, muscles engaging while stretching, and the muscles stretching. There's more - there's tips, variations and benefits to each pose...and still again, there's more. A question's and answer's section to guide you into deeper understandings and how to utilize and access the information and research out there. Another section goes over precautions and suggestions for specific health issues. The glossary included is a wonderful addition to this book. Like the rest of the book, it is clear and concise. This will be the book on your bookshelf that you will go back to again and again and again...

As a yoga instructor who doesn’t believe in chakras and stuff, I’ve been looking for a book that explains the benefits of yoga from a scientific standpoint. This book is INCREDIBLE! The information is easy to read and retain. I am so excited about this find and 100% recommend it to anyone who practices, or wants to start practicing, yoga!!!

Anyone who practices yoga needs to own this book! Science of Yoga breaks down the body systems and how yoga benefits each system accompanied by beautifully illustrated anatomy diagrams to show which muscles, joints, etc are being targeted in each pose. This book is essential for seasoned practitioners or those wanting to start their wellness journey with yoga. Highly recommend!!!

This fascinating book combines impressively simple explanations of how yoga impacts your body and how to perform each yoga pose with the in-depth illustrations for which DK books are known. I say “impressively simple” because the author, Ann Swanson, managed to condense a large amount of yoga research and anatomical information into a compact, highly readable format. The book begins with a primer on human anatomy and physiology – there’s a two-page spread on each of the major systems of the body, such as the digestive system and the skeletal system, along with details about how yoga can impact each system. As someone who hasn’t taken an anatomy class in about 18 years, I really appreciated this refresher! Next, there are two-page spreads on each yoga pose, or asana – the asanas are organized into the seated asanas, standing asanas, inversion asanas, and floor asanas. The incredible full-body illustrations of each pose show which muscles are engaged and/or stretched by each pose. As a newcomer to yoga, I especially appreciate the alignment diagram for each pose, which provides detailed instructions on exactly how you should position your body to perform the pose safely and effectively (i.e. forearms should be rotated inward). Speaking of safety, there are variations suggested for most poses to accommodate injuries and preferences. The third part of the book, the Q&A section, covers topics from “Stress,” to “Cautions” (poses to avoid if you have certain medical conditions), to “On the frontiers of science” (a lovely summary of the process of health research and how to evaluate any yoga studies you hear about in the news). Finally, I love that the author included a bibliography, which is organized by chapter – Ann Swanson provides the full citations to the scientific studies she references in the text, so you can easily look up the study yourself if you want more information. Overall, this is a beautifully done book, which I recommend highly to everyone from yoga newbies to yoga teachers!

As a yoga teacher, practitioner and yoga therapist in training, I have bookshelf upon bookshelf lined with books about anatomy, physiology, yoga anatomy, spirituality, yoga and spirituality, and ancient yogic texts, but absolutely nothing like Ann Swanson’s “Science of Yoga.” Every single one of these subjects is encapsulated within this book.She has weaved together science, yoga, anatomy, spirituality and yogic principles in such a beautiful and masterful way that this book is one that every yoga teacher, practitioner, teacher trainer and yoga therapist needs to have their bookshelves, and even better always at arms’ length to refer to and integrate into their living and teaching yoga.Visually, this book is stunning. But more so it is accessible and user-friendly. Visual learners will eat up this book immediately. Its format allows the reader to use as a reference for a single specific subject area - or to be read cover to cover. Swanson builds a solid foundation in "Science of Yoga” with exactly "that" - the science - more specifically anatomy. She then continues to build upon the science with the yoga, and then coming full circle with an informative and insightful Q & A, and ending the book by connecting the dots of science and spiritual concepts and teachings that are the foundation of yoga.As this being Swanson’s first book, and seeing what great work she has already brought to the table, I can only imagine what body of work is yet to come from her and am eager to watch (and read) her contributions to this field.

I've had this book on my shelf for about 10 years, but for some reason I'd never gotten around to reading it. Perhaps it was because I'd read Kurt Eichenwald's "Conspiracy of Fools" and may have felt that nothing could surpass that. Given the passage of time I can't say which is better, but this is an amazing book, possibly made even more amazing by the passage of time itself and the fact that I didn't replace this copy with the 10th anniversary edition.If this had been fiction, it likely would have been criticized for lacking credibility -- how could any company become the "evil empire" that seems to have been Enron? Of course, it's not fiction, and even if one assumes that the authors may have exaggerated or left out some facts that might have made the villains look less evil, it's still a "credibly incredible" book.The book demonstrates the authors' intelligence, diligence and writing ability. There are a few passages that one might argue are too detailed, but for the most part I felt that the detailed explanations were helpful and even if they hadn't been the book is eminently readable and compelling. If you like this sort of book, this is a must-read; even if you don't, it's pretty damn good.

This account of the fall of Enron should be required reading for business students and in ethics courses. If you ever wondered how excessive greed and unethical behavior on this scale could happen without someone opening their mouth, I invite you to read this book to see just how easy it was for those operating in grey areas to manipulate data and facts to reap huge profits while convincing themselves and others that they “technically “ weren’t doing anything wrong.From the book:“The larger message was that the wealth and power enjoyed by those at the top of the heap in corporate America demand no sense of broader responsibility. To accept those arguments is to embrace the notion that ethical behavior requires nothing more than avoiding the explicitly illegal, that refusing to see the bad things happening in front of you makes you innocent, and that telling the truth is the same thing as making sure that no one can prove you lied.”

I found the title of this book to be quite ironic, yet appropriate. Only ‘smart guys’ could pull off such a scandal such as the Enron fiasco, but you then have to ask yourself “How can SMART guys also be so blindly stupid?” If one were to truly believe CEO Jeff Skilling when he said that he never felt he was doing anything immoral, yet always thought he was acting in the best interests of Enron, how could that same person believe him when he abruptly resigns from the company months before its epic bankruptcy while cashing in $60 million of his stock options?As authors McLean and Elkind tell us, the simple answer is greed. Even if you don’t believe in God nor the Bible, you have to give the author of the Good Book credit when he tells us that the love of money is the root of all evil.The ironic thing is that the Enron story is so complex, that even the most prudent financial experts in the industry had a hard time deciphering the deception. Let’s be honest, the average layman gets a bit lost when reading things such as a company’s balance sheet or a 10k report, so when the financial experts kept telling everyone how great Enron was and that they were the visionary for the future, why would anyone doubt it? Even the employees (sadly) were so convinced of the positive spin, that they had the bulk of their 401k savings invested in their own company.It was ironic that the co-author of the book (Bethany McLean) first started the ripples by throwing a small stone in the pond with an article in Fortune Magazine titled “Is Enron Overpriced?” It was all downhill for the energy mogul from there.Unfortunately, the same reason why people never could (nor can now) really understand the complex financial irregularities of the company, is the same reason why this book falters a bit. The authors spend well over half of this book going over the ill-gotten deals that Enron procured in immense financial detail. Many of the chapters read like a 30-page financial statement. In other words, if you have a PhD in Finance, you might find the bulk of the material in the book readable, but for the rest of us, it’s just too much, and we get lost. I found myself skimming over many of the chapters describing the many endeavors that the company embarked on with the simple task of masquerading the fact that they weren’t actually making any money.The chapters I found more interesting were the ones where the authors were describing some of the key players at the top of the Enron food chain, and how their misguided morals influenced not only how they did business, but how they lived their personal lives as well. It’s seems as though most of the senior players had gotten a divorce at some point while they were raking in millions, and I lost track of all of the illicit romantic affairs going on between the key players. It’s also fascinating (yet not surprising) to read about how most of the top-level employees hated each other, and the immeasurable amount of backstabbing that went on amongst the leaders.The book I read was a ’10-year anniversary’ edition, and the authors discuss in the coda that, sadly, things in the business world haven’t changed as much as they probably should in lieu of the Enron scandal. As long as there is greed, there will always be corruption. In that sense, the Enron story should be a model for companies everywhere. Fortunately, I would say that more and more companies are embracing a culture of teamwork and truly being more philanthropic, but there are still companies out there that advocate that, in order to be successful, you have to step on everyone else’s neck to get to the top – even if that neck belongs to someone else in the company. Such was the culture that Skilling and his minions encouraged.A fascinating, yet depressing story. Good, but overall, I would have liked more personability and less minutia around the many complex financial dealings.

This is a very informative story about the operation within Enron. It identifies some creative methods of making a company look financially good when it has little cash or assets to support that position. The writers appear to me to be unbiased. They point out that a lot of the financial operations started out legal, but as time went on the executives shifted toward an illegal method. They thought that they were really "the smartest guys in the room" and nobody would ever untangle the web of finances they created. It is amazing how many high level people, including presidents of the United States bought into the story.If you have an accounting background, you will understand the story better than the average reader. I am an engineer, but I was able to understand the manipulations enough to enjoy reading it. As a result of this scandal, many new regulations were put into effect that are now costing all of us money as the companies must follow them and the government must monitor them.

This is supposed to be the preeminent book on Enron and it's pretty good. It covers the greed, conflicting company policies, incredibly poor management, and willing ignorance both of the principal executives and upper level employees. It's no surprise the company failed and took alot of innocent (and some not so innocent) employees down with it. What I wanted to read and didn't were lower level employee stories of their transition from pride to discouragement and more about the widespread collateral damage the company caused. It's a good, well written, and informative read and if you are interested in Enron you will enjoy it, but it was rushed to print and needs a post collapse update by its authors.

It is quite a bit of money for a piece of paper. It is not in great detail either.I wouldn't buy it again if I had the opportunity. I could have just as easily looked at my atlas, which is probably what I should have done.

Smaller size than the Hema map I also purchased. Relief in different colors makes landforms easier to understand. Very complete coverage of places in the country.

I am a research entomologist studying certain groups of insects on New Guinea. Frequently, localities mentioned on sample data labels (villages and small towns)are on not indicated on most atlas maps. This map has many more such localities than do most maps and is thus very useful to me. Additionally, the boundaries of the provinces are clearly indicated. I have thus found this handsome map very useful.For anyone travelling to PNG, this is the map to get!

This map is fabulous. It has all the detail I wanted. The best part is that it lists airstrips, although the topography is pretty great too. I also like that it has many rivers labeled.

There is absolutely no place on our planet like Papua New Guinea. Wild, wonderful, lawless, infrastructure-less adventure awaits.

We're happy with the book. Picked up a used one, and it's in decent condition, as described. Has good information on day trips in our area, which is perfect for our family, still trying to get familiar with our local surroundings, and looking for new interesting places to explore.
