Great news for fans of Berkeley Breathed's classic comic strip Bloom County: he has a new collection of comics out! It's been a quarter century since he's been in the funny papers, but folks like me, for whom Opus and Bill the Cat are old friends and icons, will be delighted to see the old gang back in Bloom County Episode XI: A New Hope.In his introduction, Breathed mentions his literary hero, Harper Lee, whose characters Atticus Finch and Scout took on a life of their own for readers long after Lee was done with them. He writes, "Rare, these: Worlds and characters that are more alive for one's readers than they are for their creator. We who stumble upon them are the Blessed Ones. . . not so much clever as maybe just plain lucky. We shouldn't walk away too easily." After walking away for twenty-five years, Breathed walked back and found new joy, or, as he puts it, "joyfulishness" in Bloom County and its inhabitants.Breathed gets a laugh out of plenty of corners of recent pop culture and social media. Opus's main presidential campaign platform is a return to two spaces after a period. (I'm in!) He pokes fun at the red Starbucks cup controversy. To the uninitiated, Bloom County might seem wholly alien in its concept and execution, as if from another time.Thatâ€™s fine. Thatâ€™s because, it is. It is from a better time. And a better place.For those of us lucky enough to have been graced by the original strip during the 80s and early 90s, Episode XI has almost a canonical significance. For Bloom County religious fanatics, this volume serves almost as a lost testament, not unlike the Dead Sea Scrolls. Only in better condition, and available through Amazon (and on Kindle).The richness of the Bloom County editorial tapestry is hard to understate; Breathed won a Pulitzer for his work, and very deservedly so. If you are new to Bloom County, you are cheating yourself of the richness of the experience if you donâ€™t start from the beginning, and Bill the Catâ€™s various spiritual awakenings (and blackouts) over the course of his several lives, (and rumored deaths), his various cult group affiliations, Communist defections, and peripatetic presidential candidacies.With the utter lack of civility and original thinking in todayâ€™s editorial discourse, it is refreshing to return to the tableau of Breathedâ€™s Bloom County, where his familiar cast of characters represent not only us, but also the pitfalls and hopes of society in general, and give us some ability to poke fun at the absurdity of our existence.If introspection completely fails you in every aspect of your life, Bloom County is likely not the comic for you. I had (some how) not heard that Breathed was doing new Bloom County strips so when I saw this is was a must buy. I stopped counting how many times I laughed out loud while reading this. Some great athletes try to keep going well past their prime but in this case The Master has returned and he is just as good as he used to be! So many new situations to see the characters in and so many new pieces of tech for them to get introduced to.What could be the harm of Opus typing in two unrelated words to see how the internet works? He was shocked but I laughed like hell.Double BB thanks for taking it up again, glad to read you too are enjoying the work this time around.I still would like more comments by Berkeley on his own work but I also liked the messages left on facebook when the strips were released.If you like the old strip-buy the new.The book itself is a bit larger than most reprint strip collection, the have black and white "daily" strips and two page color Sunday strips.IDW please do more books like this with some of the modern Masters strips, Pickles, Frazz could be great additions.When's Episode XII? I am waiting.......

Absolutely LOVED it.25 years waiting for this to happen again and it was worth it. If you grew up like I did readin ghtis in the funnies, or love great humor. Buy this book. I got it yesterday and sat down after work and binge read it in about two hours. (Laughing at the jokes and everything slowed me down quite a bit)I only have one complaint.The Last page.That was the end of the book and now have to wait for them to come out again.

I was really excited to finally receive my copy of Pailin's book. It's been on pre-order for months and I've long been a fan of her amazing cooking videos for awhile, so today was truly a great day when it finally arrived.What I was really pleased with to see immediately is that Pai did an excellent job at putting a substantial amount of information in the first few chapters of the book that go really far in explaining a lot of the foundation of Thai cooking. As you may know from her videos, she is an excellent teacher in that she communicates really clearly what she is doing, how to do it correctly, and most importantly, WHY she is doing it. (and all with a dose of charm!) Cooking isn't just assembling a bunch of ingredients in a bowl. Knowing how and when to add an ingredient and what that ingredient is contributing to the recipe in terms of flavor and texture is very important. I think that is why Pai can help you make good recipes great when you are actually preparing them.There is a lot of info on the various ingredients, from herbs to sweeteners to all the unique sauces that are used. And yes, we all wish we had a friendly Thai grocer down the street, but for most of us in N. America, that isn't common, so she gives some good tips on finding ingredients or when she believes "Educated substitutions" (good word choice) or even omissions are ok for the sake of the recipe. You should never let a lack of finding a key ingredient keep you from trying to learn these recipes, so she will help you overcome!There is also a section specifically on vegetarian and vegan dishes which is really great as that diet is quite common and Thai food lends itself really well to being easily offered in a veg variation.I see a lot of the great recipes I have already tried from her videos featured in this book, but was also pleased to see even more new ones as well as foundation recipes like curry pastes and stocks. You will see some nice mention of the region of dishes which is good, because I think that's one of the main missing pieces of information that many new to Thai food don't get at first. They don't often get to learn, that the cuisines in the North and South are dramatically different in style from each other and that curries don't just come in green or red. (see JUNGLE curry!)I am sure anyone new or familiar to Thai cooking will really love this book. One other cool feature of the book is that there are QR codes throughout it that allow you to quickly view a video on said topic right on your phone from the Hot Thai Kitchen site as you are reading! Ingenious!Something else that I have not seen before in a cooking book is a small table on each recipe page that shows a "breakdown" on the ingredients in terms of what their role is. (sauce, aromatic, flavor) This is a cool feature and, as Pai says, she wants to help you understand how the recipes are assembled so that you can mix and match your own components to start to make your own dishes! This table really helps to do that in my opinion.Enjoy the recipes, technique and beautiful images that fill this great book!

I really love this 'cookbook' because it is so much more than that. I got mine 2 days ago and I cannot put it down. It's like reading a wonderful colorful novel about the history and culture of Thailand. This book is teaching cuisine not just recipes.I have been cooking Thai food from Pailin's YouTube recipes for about 8 months and this book really rounds out the whole experience. And I might add, I make some pretty awesome Thai food now!!Thank you!!

The background information included in the "Understanding Thai Cuisine" section was also very beneficial. I couldn't be happier with this cookbook.

Loved this so much I got 2 more as gifts for my little Brother and best friend. Pailin's YouTube Video's got me through some tough days over 3 months in the hospital for treatment in 2015. was waiting on this book to come out. Have been cooking Thai food since 1990, took about 30 classes over a 3 year period, and while I am pretty proficient, I really liked some of her takes on dishes, as well as new ones. I also liked her opening 60 pages, which give you some of the origins and underpinnings of Thai cuisine, which I got in my classes in the back room of the Royal Thai restaurant in Newport Beach, but are good for others learning and deeper understanding of why Thai food has layers of tastes in it. Like other Asian cuisines, too many Americans get used to the way the dishes have been altered to our tastes. Pailin's book gives you the authentic way to make things, while also letting you leverage some of the pastes, sauces and ingredients that are now more readily available today. And gives you substitutions for availability, tastes and items you may need to avoid. But also tells you when to avoid those, VERY important in my eyes. And the easy Scan Codes to leap to her YouTube Video on a particular method or Recipe really makes this a great gift for your friends and family. Because while I truly love to be told I will be cooking for a big group when I visit, it is time to Pay it Forward, and this book gives you that ability, while keeping it fun and easy, even for the nieces and nephews. I really like watching her cook on YouTube, and her website has some tasty recipes, but this book was a total letdown. There's only like 20 recipes, and they're all...odd... Half the book is talking about ingredients in detail, the story of her life, and pictures of her family. I wanted a cookbook, not a biography.

There are a number of good Thai books available, but I've found no better source of inspiration and guidance than this author. Well written, easy to follow with a bit of education thrown in for fun. Almost all of the ingredients are available nationwide, so get this book, a few "tools" and try some of these dishes. Your friends and family will thank you! Start with the "Falling Water" spicy beef salad...it's incredible. Her book will show you how to see the free video to watch it being made.

Great cookbook. Would be a great value at twice the price. Especially like the QR code link on the recipe page. This allows viewing a video as the author prepares the same dish. Plus, the first section of the book has much good info about tools, spices, techniques, etc. used in Thai cooking. Love the book!

Pailin is hands down my only go-to person for authentic Thai food. I've been along time since subscriber to her YouTube site and her cookbook delivers on every level. The book is beautiful and I especially like the sections on ingredients and cooking supplies. I have made countless meals using her recipes. My Thai friends cannot believe that I actually cooked the meals. They actually want me to show them how to make these meals. Whether you are buying this book for yourself or as a gift, you cannot go wrong. I highly recommend it!

I read a ton of books on boatbuilding, and this one is full of old school information. If you love classic techniques like I do, and learning efficiently, this is a great read. The plans are easy to understand, and he really explains why he builds them the way that he does. Gardner is a real teacher in this book.

Great book with many drawings for every boat. You need to understand lofting to use the drawings in the book. There aren't any lofts for power boats though. Mostly row noats and small skiffs. There are a few pages for some outboard designs. No runabouts though. Overall a great book and worth it.

Very good book. Well written and easy to understand. I definitely would recommend this to anyone who is interested in building a wooden boat.

This collection of complete boat plans, instructions, and boat-building tips is simply wonderful. Mr. Gardner was a man with the common touch and the ability to communicate clearly--all of these boats are aimed at the "amateur" builder. He has no axes to grind; his designs include all of the traditional construction techniques plus glued plywood and taped seam plywood; there are rowboats, sailboats, and powerboats. The articles are also sprinkled with historical and editorial commentary. I'm reading it for the fourth (or is it fifth?) time. When I finish my canoe...

- Author storytelling abilities are great so this book is a pleasure to read.- there is a lot of valuable boatbuilding material inside, thou as it is contained within boat's construction notes, it's hard to extract. This book will not be a reference manual.- Boat's construction methods are not so classic. There is a lot of plywood and epoxy.- Selection of designs was rather unsatisfying for me. There are wonderful rowboat designs (peapods, whitehalls) but it lacks in sailboat area. If you are not sailboat maniac you will find interesting designs on all levels of difficulty, after all.- The level of details vary from design to design. Some are very complete step by step guides, others only rough sketches.- As the book is about small craft there is little information about heavier backbone member construction. But to tell the truth I haven't found any book that would be satisfying in this field.- For me, notes at the end (boatbuilder's planes) were one of the most interesting and part of the whole volume (along with boat's and builder's histories).

John Gardner died in 1995, and left a legacy of preserving the designs of 19th century American small workboats and recreational craft. The designs are not for the beginner, and those looking for a how-to primer would be greatly served by reading "How to Build Glued-Lapstrake Wooden Boats" by Hill and Brooks. But Gardner gives great inspiration on the type of boat that your would like to invest your scarce project hours into. Gardner took the care to measure the vestiges of classic small craft that were still observable during his lifetime, and wooden boat enthusiasts will appreciate this comprehensive effort.

What a great book! I had a hard time putting this book down and find myself going back often to compare boat designs. John Gardner places great value on traditional techniques but does mention modern materials once in a while. Still, I wonder if some of these boats could be built lighter with less solid wood and more marine plywood then he recommends. There are enough different designs to satisfy most boat builders. The plans are excellent in detail but too small really for construction purposes. You will need to loft them with care.

This is a very good book on what you can do with a MIRO:BIT board.But it's not for beginners.A beginner with no programming experience should start by usingJavaScript Blocks to create code. But mention of Blocks is in Appendix Bof the book.This book uses the MicroPython language to write code. MicroPython ispowerful and worthwhile learning, but not for the rank beginner.If you're experienced at programming, but not on the MICRO:BIT, thenthis book is for you.One great feature, not found in all books on MICRO:BIT, is that thescreen-shot photos and drawings are in color. Black & White is verydifficult to read, especially if the IDE is color-coded.

With the overwhelming prevalence of technology in today's world, it may seem paradoxical that educators fear a shortage of technical skills in the coming generation. After all, don't younger people just magically possess mystical technical powers that older people can't understand? That highly exaggerated stereotype still persists, and it helps mask a real and immanent shortage of computer science and engineering knowledge among younger generations. To help address this looming crisis, the British Broadcasting Service (also well known globally as "The BBC") has created a simpler and more accessible microcontroller called the Micro:bit. But, some may ask, doesn't the microcontroller market now resemble the Earth's orbit in the movie Wall-E, strewn with countless devices that defy classification? Perhaps a little bit, but the Micro:bit serves as an introduction to this vast array of more complex devices such as the dominant Arduino and Raspberry Pi. Better yet, the BBC even plans to give 1 million of these devices to students in the UK for free. They hope that actually holding one of these little technical wonders will inspire future tech geniuses to action.Those who don't qualify for the BBC's generous giveaway can pick up a Micro:bit pretty cheaply just about anywhere. The "go" kit also includes a battery pack, AAA batteries and a micro-USB cable for only a few dollars extra. Those familiar with other microcontrollers will notice that the Micro:bit is larger than a Photon but smaller than an Arduino. It also has a "UI" made up of 25 LEDs that does everything from display static icons to scroll text marquee-style. Plugging in a Micro:bit for the first time reveals quite a show. No screen required. Those looking for more detail on how to get the most out of this little thing can consult the many online resources available or go for a more traditional approach and pick up a tangible book. One of these books, in the "Make:" series, fully covers the basics, aptly titled "Getting Started with the micro:bit." This book has one major problem, "Chapter 8," but more on that later.Right away the book presents the full story of the Micro:bit and delineates its place in the ever burgeoning microcontroller market. It then gives a thorough tour of the board, which contains far more than seems possible given it teeny size, including an ARM processor, an accelerometer, push buttons, a BLE antenna and GPIO pins. Peripherals also appear quickly and the book in particular suggests purchasing an Edge Connector Breakout Board and an Edge Connector Motor Driver Board, both easily available online. The book also favors Python development and introduces the online MicroPython Web Editor, but soon argues for and switches to the desktop mu development application. Some simple sample code shows how to make shapes on the Micro:bit's LED "screen." More involved code demonstrates use of the accelerometer (if the device sits upright a happy face displays, if upside down, an angry face) and basic LED animation. If using mu, remember to space out functions properly, which the book tends not to show explicitly, or the "check" function will bark loudly.Another chapter goes deeper and introduces the device's mbed operating system, which actually uses C++ code. Not to worry, the book only uses very rudimentary code and readers need no C++ skills to follow along. Though arguably too many pages get dedicated to the "optional" Yotta install, which makes desktop mbed coding possible. These sections may have worked better as an online "bonus" than as a 7 page textual rampage. The book clearly states that the rather complicated setup isn't even required. GPIO pins follow and here the Edge Connector Breakout Board and Motor Driver Board get demonstrated with an extremely basic LED and potentiometer setup. The Micro:bit's I2C capabilities also get outlined, though soldering is required to fully exploit this capability. The book also references a "Micro:bot" for use in a later chapter, but it never seems to appear again. Then, the first reference to "Chapter 8" occurs. Anyone looking at the book's contents will notice that the chapters only number up to 7, but in numerous places the book refers to a non-existent "Chapter 8," which must have vanished in a rush to print. Too bad, because it sounds like it would have covered a lot of interesting things. Oh well. The chapter on Bluetooth may frustrate iPhone users, since an essential program for connecting the Micro:bit with Bluetooth only exists for Android. Also, connecting an iPhone with the Micro:bit has some quirks, but "Chapter 8" will discuss serial communication which apparently works on both platforms. Sadly, Chapter 8 didn't make the cut. Hopefully a future edition will address this omission, or at least clean up the references to the chapter that doesn't exist. Lastly, two appendices discuss the origins of the Micro:bit and the other programming environments that exist.Despite the book's flaws, including the missing Chapter 8, it does present a decent overview of the Micro:bit's capabilities. It only gives a taste of what's possible and anyone looking for additional details will have to seek out other resources. Still, "Getting Started with the micro:bit" provides a great introduction to the little device that will hopefully introduce large amounts of students to the world of microcontrollers. The Micro:bit should provide a good foundation for more complex and sophisticated embedded engineering for software development and the Internet of Things. Many people may even get their start with this little device that communicates with animated LEDs. Not only that, perhaps Chapter 8 will show up soon? We shall see.

Make's "Getting Started with the micro:bit" is a very good introduction to a tiny single-board computer (SBC) that can be connected to Windows, Linux, or Mac computers and programmed using several different languages, primarily JavaScript, Python and C++. (The latter two are favorites of the author, Wofram Donat.) Like most other inexpensive SBCs, the micro:bit is "designed mainly for one purpose: performing one or more simple tasks and then interfacing with the Internet of Things (IoT)." The tasks can be changed by making changes to the software. And the micro:bit comes with a somewhat unusual list of capabilities for such an inexpensive device (typically around $20 or less for a micro:bit). These include: 25 LEDs and two buttons, all programmable; 25 general-purpose input/output pins; "an onboard compass and accellerometer that you can read from and incorporate into your scripts"; and "an onboard Bluetooth Low-Energy (BLE) antenna that enables [the micro:bit] to pair with any Bluetooth-enabled devices, such as your smartphone or laptop." (Be advised you will have to use C++ to work on Bluetooth connections involving the micro:bit).Wolfram Donat does a fine job of introducing and explaining the micro:bit and showing how to hook it up and get it working. Using clear, well-organized steps, he presents several simple projects that demonstrate the micro:bit's capabilities and hardware connections. And he shows how to download, modify and use some scripts to control the micro: bit. He also explains and illustrates some of the different coding environments now available to program the micro:bit. Furthermore, he tells the story of how the micro:bit came to be in 2015. The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) wanted to create an SBC that could be given away to a million children in their first year of secondary school, to help create new technical talent in the UK. By 2016, the micro:bit was a huge hit. Indeed, a TV show featured three young students using their devices to steer a 3,200-ton radio telescope to point at a specific pulsar. The micro:bit is now available via Amazon and other sources.One complaint: Some of the editor opening-screen examples in the print edition require a magnifying glass to read. Although dated (explores vignettes from the 1980s), it is a classic for one reason: it doesn't just list the ways to negotiate in steps or easily-remembered "bullet points", but instead details several complete transactions from Donald Trump in negotiating with everyone from the tenants of a building that wanted to maintain their rent-controlled units, to dealing with Mayor Ed Koch, the building inspectors, other real estate moguls, the New Jersey gaming commission, etc. In the classic "show, don't tell", Trump permits the reader to glean the tips of negotiation, rather than hitting us on the head with them, as would most books.The advice is practical and real, unlike "cheerleaders" such as Oprah, Tony Robbins, etc. who dispense nothing but pie-in-the-sky platitudes and "life goals" that translate to reality about as well as the mat- and mirrors-practiced mechanics of a karate instructor translates to a gang of teens holding a knife to one's neck; it looks good in the strip-mall "dojo", but in a dark alley, not so much.While Stephen Covey lists "habits", and gives small examples of each, Trump has opted to give a few large examples, going on for about 20 pages each, and looking at his thought process on each step of the real estate and gaming deal. He studies each situation from all angles and, particularly as this was earlier in his career, shows a humble side not seen in his current incarnation; it is not a stretch to say that, financially, he stuck his neck out on the line for some of the deals in this book, such as buying the schleppy Barbizon hotel in NYC. One of the great lessons of the book, frankly, is how to leverage negotiating power without overly, or too early in the process, committing personal capital; limit downside risk.Fortunately, the writing is clean, easy to follow, and smooth as the ice rink that Trump aided NYC in constructing, on time and on budget. It is a well-written book (and I'm picky as hell about writing style)An added bonus is that, for the most part, Trump deals with each session ethically and morally. There is nothing grotesquely underhanded about any of the dealings here, and, in fact, Trump outlines several players in the NYC real estate game who are ethical and honest, such as the founder of Tiffany's. It's a pleasure to read of the attitude of others, and the power of a handshake.Recommended.

There is no useful business advice in this book, which is a waste of money unless you want to read about Trump boasting about himself. Funny thing, though, is that it does not mention his bankruptcies.

I couldnt put this book down, I especially enjoyed the chapter on the park rink deal. It no longer surprises me how successful Trump has been with our economy, and the trade deals hes been making. The man understands business, and how to get things accomplished! I am beginning to think all politicians should be business men/women before ever entering office. It would be great for the country ... and the world! I know I'm sold on the concept after reading this book!
