From the Inside Flap
Rain of Gold is a true-life saga of love, family and destiny that pulses with bold vitality, sweeping from the war-ravaged Mexican mountains of Pancho Villa's revolution to the days of Prohibition in California. It all began when Villaseor's maternal grandmother sat him down in their little home in the barrio of Carlsbad, California, gave him sweet bread and told him the story of their past. Of his mother Lupe, the most beautiful girl in the whole village who was only a child when Villa's men came shooting into their canyon. And of his father Juan and his family, reduced to rags and starvation as they sought refuge across the border, where they believed that endless opportunity awaited. Lupe and Juan met and fell in love in California, but they found that the doors to the Promised Land were often closed to those from south of the border. His father was forced to take the law into his own hands, in spite of his wife's objections. With love and humor, Villaseor shares this passionate love story that celebrates the triumph of the human spirit. An all-American story of struggle and success, Rain of Gold focuses on three generations of Villaseor's kin, their spiritual and cultural roots back in Mexico, their immigration to California and overcoming poverty, prejudice and economic exploitation. It is the warm-hearted and spirited account of the wily, wary and persevering forebears of Victor Villaseor.

OMG…… I was immersed in this book! I didn't realize it contained actual photographs of the main characters and almost fell over when I came to them, because I was already so involved with them. "You mean," I said to myself, "that's Lupe?" I was in awe! What a beauty. I already loved her and had never seen her face! This is a really fun and informative read….. and a true story. Highly recommended, and I happen to know the son of the author, which is why I read it. I love Mexico and the courage of those people who fled the revolution and came to the US. Love it!
Epic portrayal of a Mexican family's journey to a new life in the United States -- at times poetic, at times hilarious. Through the story, the reader will fall in love with Lupe, who begins in the narrative as a little girl; admire the matriarchs of the two families as the true heroes; and question his/her emotions toward Salvador, the bootlegger who at once searches for the deepest levels of love and relationship on one hand, and a fundamental lack of ability for honesty on the other hand. Part of the wisdom of the book is Villasenor's skill to have the reader see the good and the bad in the characters. The story denies the artificial yet ubiquitous practice to categorize everyone and everything as good or bad. Lastly, as a caucasian, who grew up in Texas and Southern California, I love the Hispanic people and much of the Hispanic culture. This book made me appreciate them both more.
My wife borrowed this book from the local library and had to return it back because students have priority, so I searced Amazon and bought this book for my wife and she can't put it down as she reads it she starts to laugh out loud because of what is written she says it reminds her of the grammar her grandmother would use. She says she loves it, I have purchased the next book for her. She says the author is awesome. I have read some of the pages and it is as if I was back there again growing up in East L.A
This is a seriously fascinating book about family immigrating from Mexico in the early part of the last century. It made me laugh, cry and think of my own family and their journeys to America many years ago, from Europe. I first read this book over 20 years ago after I heard Terry Gross on Fresh Air interview the author Victor Villasenor. He said it took him over 10 years to write the book about his family and their joys and struggles to come to and live in America. He intrigued me so much, I bought the soft cover and loved it. I recently bought the Kindle version so I could once again re-read this masterpiece. My list of books that I re-read is extremely short (3).
My parents were very close to the same ages as Juan and Lupe. However, our family was in New Mexico. My family moved from New Mexico to Utah in the mid 1940's and I, number 10 in our family, was born in Utah, in 1948. It was very much like moving from old Mexico, culturally speaking. Although we were not Roman Catholic, our family had a similar dedication to God and family. This is the second time I have read this delightfully beautiful book! I am going to get copies for my grand kids to read. Their Mom's married Anglos and our families are biracial. This is an opportunity to give them a glimpse of where their roots come from. I can't wait! It is all so beautifully written. It has been a sweet revisiting of my favorite book!
Amazing, rich, deep, intriguing and intense. This book is one of the most stunning and beautifully written books I have ever read.Victor Villasenor weaves the words of his family story into a vibrant cloth of passion, pain, faith, strength, love and adversity. A tapestry of brilliant color and bold design, velvet thread and magnificent warmth, I found myself wrapped in a shroud of Mexican magic and mystique.
Absolutely one of my all-time favorite reads. While Rain of Gold is a sweeping epic about families surviving the Mexican Revolution and then migrating to the states, we care because the stories of these real people because they are so intimately told and the characters so well developed. You feel like you are in the room with them, and when the book ends, you miss Sal and Lupe and their families. Not only is Villasenor a magnificent storyteller, he gives his stories and characters moral significance, and that makes this book a classic. He dispels stereotypes and reminds us that we're all one race, and the power of motherly love and faith gives us the strength to keep living and loving.
Only halfway through this and loving it. The characters are so well developed. And the revelation of a different culture and way of thinking about life is tremendous. A must-read. And you could not try to stop these wonderful people at the border because they are somehow tainted and you hurt for them with every prejudicial event they experience on their journey.
