What this Iraqi apostate from Islam faced was as bad as or worse than anything Soviet dissidents had to undergo. Yet he persevered. The story gives an intimate and rather terrifying feeling of exactly what it's like to try to survive as a convert to Christianity in Iraq and Jordan -- the brutal prisons, the great danger, the desperate need for secrecy, the totalitarian social pressure exerted even within the family, were more terrible than for dissidents in the former Soviet Union. A riveting story of a man's courageous suffering, miraculous exodus, and ultimate triumph.
This is a compelling book, which I found hard to put down, even though it is a translation which at times is a bit stilted. For the past year, I have been reading about Islam and Muslims, as the textbooks we are using in Catholic school social studies have chapters (and parts of chapters) on Islam and its impact on culture and history. I had to catch up fast as I didn't study this in college. (I've reviewed several of the books I've read on Amazon.com.)This account of the conversion of an Iraqi Muslim to Catholicism relates the struggles he underwent to accept Christ and eventually become a member of the Church through baptism. His Muslim family would have nothing of this and eventually kidnapped him and had him imprisoned where he was brutally treated. Later they tried to kill him, but he escaped. Still Muhammad (later Joseph) persevered and remained faithful as Christ had so profoundly touched his life and heart. (If Catholics and other Christians were so moved by their faith, this would be a different world and Church!)The book makes it clear that it is very hard for a Muslim to become Christian--just about impossible, that everything in their faith and society works against that. This book details these things through the experience of Joseph Fadelle.I highly recommend this book, especially for those who want to understand the Muslim mentality more clearly.
Since I am an Ex- Muslim , I was waiting enthusiastically to get this book. The author , an Iraqi Shiite who is descended from the prophet himself , risked his life , his family , his wealth, and his country for the sake of Christ. Joseph's woes were not easy at all. He faced many difficulties, and was very close to be killed by his own family. At one point , the highest ayatollah in Iraq was involved making a fatwa against him. His wife and children , who left Islam too, were sharing the tragedies with him. Joseph's dream was to recieve "the bread of life." To achieve his goal he needed to be baptized. Nevertheless , the road to baptism in the middle east is full of obstacles.Bishops and clergymen at some point refused to even listen to the Spiritual needs of Joseph."The price to Pay" , therefore, is an incredible testimony in two ways; first it stresses how much sacrifices a person will make for Christ; secondly , it describes clearly the lack of basic freedom in the middle east.
I read this in an afternoon - I couldn't put it down. The vocabulary and grammar is uncomplicated (at times a bit strange due to it being translated), but for me that didn't detract from the story line. Joseph was and is a brave man with a brave family. Having been born in America, I cannot imagine the obstacles and dangers involved in converting to Christianity. I loved when he said that after embracing his Christian faith, he longed for love and to give love. That's how Christianity is supposed to be! As a Catholic myself, I was angered at the injustices he suffered, pained by the torment (physical and psychological) that he underwent, and rejoiced at his eventual freedom. For many, the "price to pay" to be a part of the Christian minority is steep indeed. People continue paying this price today.
Everything about this one man's life is a miracle of grace. Once I began this young man's life story I couldn't put the book down! I could have read it non-stop if life didn't get in the way. Nothing deterred his goal to receive Baptism in the Roman Catholic Church, the one true Church. He was ready to give up his life and he came very close to doing just that. This book confirmed me in my faith as a cradle Catholic. As in this day and age Christians all over the world and sadly even in the United States of America are being persecuted for the sake of Jesus Christ. I can only pray that I have half the courage Joseph Fadelle had to face his enemies who included his own family and that of his wife's.
Excellent book! It exposes the hypocrisy and lack of love in many Muslims, esp those in higher status who do everything to maintain status, even to the point of killing family members. The author read the Gospels to find fault but instead, found the love of Christ that drew him--over many years of suffering.
I could not put this down! I read it in two days during every spare minute (in between soccer tournament games and family events). Now I normally read around five books at a time, but after I started reading The Price to Pay I put all the rest on hold. The story was that gripping and suspenseful! I really can't recommend this book enough! One of the memorable books of a lifetime!
From the first paragraph I was wrapped up in this book. I couldn't put it down. So inspiring! It brings home how fortunate we are here with religious freedom. Joseph suffered so much for his love of Christ, it makes me feel ashamed the way I take my faith for granted sometimes. I recommend this book to anyone that wants to read about true strength.
