Excellent detailed biblical commentary. Wide source of theological views for consideration with D.A. view summarizing in most cases the most widely accepted literal explanation.

In the process of studying the writings of John I kept seeing various commentators making reference to Carson. I have a friend who is also a big fan of Carson's works so both of these things influenced me to buy this work. This book actually exceeded any expectations I had. I cannot decide what is the best work on John but it is certainly between F.F. Bruce and this one.First I would like to say that Carson is very articulate and exact. He is not given to fanciful fits of imagination of clumsy exegetical comments. He is a real scholar who approaches the topic with class and sensitivity. The book started with him giving a synopsis of past hundred and fifty years of scholarship on John. He systematically deconstructs and dismantles every objection to the authorship of the Apostle John. He does this in a cool and calm manner that takes all views into account while exposing the weaknesses of the methodology espoused by Bultmann and his school of thought. This part of the work was colossal!Carson proceeds with the narrative with reserve and caution. He talks about a variety of views and usually shows their strengths and weaknesses pointing out the one he thought was most likely. He has mastery over New Testament Greek and his command of the language makes his ideas even more plausible. There are areas where he is unsure and he leaves those areas open with a few possibilities but usually he discusses why he favors one over another. He never resorts to belittling or running another view down but always proceeds with a cool-headed approach to theology.This book is unique because he achieves a strong balance. For those who are well-versed in the Gospel of John they will find this book to be a great addition to their library and will no doubt acquire some things to add to what they are already know. At the same time, it is not an overwhelming work and one could hypothetically read this book without any previous background to John's works and still walk away with valuable insights into the overall theme of John's Gospel.I would like to offer some criticism as I often do for other works but I really can't think of anything that was big enough to bring up. It is accessible, theologically sound, well argued, exhaustive, and professional all the way around. He deals with some delicate theological issues and does so without resorting to dogma like Sproul did in his work on John. Overall, this is a must for your library. I would say that this and Bruce are two of the best works out there on the subject. Carson offers great advice for young preachers who are preaching John to their people for the first time and great devotional reflections. It is a big work so be ready to labor working your way through it but it is worth it!

DA Carson is an absolute genius when it comes to gospel exposition! I have gotten through the 17th chapter of John in this book and I am nothing short of amazed at how easy it is to understand and how enjoyable it is to read. Dr. Carson has been a true blessing to me through this book and I whole heatedly recommend it to all!

The vast array of sources referenced gives the reader confidence that Dr. Carson has comprehensively interacted with the material. He is fair in his treatment of opposing interpretive views, yet definite in his own conclusions.The flow of thought is coherent and the writing style articulate, although I admit consulting my English dictionary once or twice. Because his treatment of the Greek text demonstrates scholarly precision, yet does not require knowledge of the language, I recommend this commentary to laymen and academics alike.Dr. Carson adheres to a historical-grammatical method of hermeneutics that well supports his evangelical outlook. I especially appreciate his consistent appeal to the context and logical flow of the book as a guide to judging between interpretations proposed by various commentators.Richard L. This has been incredibly helpful in writing inductive Bible studies on the book of John. I highly recommend it as a member of the clergy. What you'll find in this book is insightful and also academic. There are plenty of reviews on this book so I will end mine saying I have deeply benefitted from owning this commentary.

Excellent resource with insights into the Gospel of John. DA Carson does a good job and has a number of other commentaries one might want to add to their collection.

This is perhaps the best commentary on John for preaching and teaching purposes. While it still a choice for many scholars, it is easily accessible for preachers with less academic prowess. Carson, also, does a fine job presenting different interpretations even handedly, and sharing the strengths and weaknesses of these various positions. While I do not always agree on the position he arrives at it is a tremendous help to have the positions not accepted by the author treated fairly.

I like this because it presents the same material as the NIV commentary from a different point of view. This is more directed at scholars. I have difficulty with Carson's style of presenting differing opinions. It is not easy to follow.

After returning a very poorly written Echo Show manual, I searched again and found this one! I am halfway through the book and already have learned so much more. The book is written and designed professionally, and you can sign up for future updates. Highly recommend this book if you are looking for a complete user guide.

A very valuable book to learn the full capabilities of the Echo Show.

Takes a while to get to things you want. Hard initially to get specific answers to verbal questions. Gets better after you've heard more about the information you want. It is still hard to get the specific wording that triggers Alexa's getting you the right info.

The book is easy to read. I learned many things that enhanced my use. In addition, I was able to modify a few calendar/sharing (on home screen) options I did not like.

Informative. Great references. Detailed explanations of features. Would recommend to those new to the Show.

Bought this to help mu mom understand her Echo and it's still too technical.Was hoping it would be very basic in language but no.

The cover is very misleading. The cover clearly shows the 2 generation but once you start reading, they just talk about the first echo show. Very disappointed.

As a long time Nikon DSLR Camera owner I purchased this book on the Mirrorless Nikon Z7 mainly because it was inexpensive compared to others on the same camera, I downloaded and previewed the sample first and was extremely pleased with the full version. An excellent guide and I will be referring to it for many years to come while I use my Nikon Z7, my only regret was not having this book available in late Sept 2018 when I purchased the camera here in Australia.

My title is the first problem I have with this book. Throughout, the author here is X and later I am going to tell you why this may be important and how you might be able to use the feature. Not a good guide as far as I am concerned. If it could be returned, I would do just that.

I am very glad I got this and all the fun digital advantages make it easy to find things. Use the search feature!!

terrific practical guide in all aspects of the Nikon Z6 operation

A very good, well written complement to the manual. A real help for exploring the camera and will be a useful reference in the future.

I am a long-time Nikon DSLR shooter who recently got into mirrorless because of the smaller size and weight. When Nikon released the Z7 and Z6, I was delighted. However, there is a learning curve because of the differences between DSLRs and MILCs, and this book does a great job in explaining what those differences are and how to best utilize the features of this camera. Highly recommended!

I didn't buy this from Amazon since I don't have a Kindle (and that's the only version Amazon sells), but I'd like to say this is an excellent guide to using Nikon's new Z7 mirrorless camera. It's clearly written and easy to understand, with full details on every aspect of this fine piece of equipment. It has already cleared up several things for me that I didn't understand about the Z7, coming from years of using DSLRs, and I'm sure I'll consult it many times in the future, too.

Doug’s books have joined me in my development as a photographer beginning with my Nikon D750 and continuing through my D500,D850 and now my Z6. This book is clearly written ,and anticipates and answers all the questions that may emerge as you familiarize with the Z 6 and progressively deepen your experience with it. It also serves as a superb reference book where you can easily reference a particular subject in its comprehensive index.

We already know how well the words work as songs, but having them all printed in one place in nice sturdy bounding allows one to experience them in a different light- reading them in order (they're arranged alphabetically) with their counterpart illustration on the opposite page is an experience of its own. If you were interested in WWII and/or the battle at Midway, you probably read Prange's "Miracle at Midway" and found it thrilling. The "Battle of Midway" movie follows closely on the book, with the added obligatory romantic interest (and she is lovely). Both were based on Fuchida's account published quickly after the US occupation government allowed such literature.If you are interested in WWII and/or the battle at Midway, you should read "Shattered Sword"; research done by Tully and Parshall find that Fuchida's account was written and strongly biased for public consumption. It was less than honest at best, and known to be so by Japanese sources. You will be disabused of several fantasies, none of which diminish the importance of the battle: It marked the end of Japan's expansion in the North Pacific. At Guadalcanal, the Japanese offensive was halted in the South Pacific and not long after in New Guinea. Within 6 months, the Nazis found the end of their tether at both Stalingrad and in Africa; the Axis was thereafter on the defensive; the war was decided. Sadly, the Axis demanded millions of more deaths to be convinced.Tully and Parshall are nothing if not thorough in their research; the Japanese losses at Midway had nothing to do with 'planes not launched from the flight deck' (as Fuchida has it), the losses had to do with carrier operations, carrier design and the unrelenting (if, until the end, futile) US attacks on the Japanese carrier forces: By the time of the dive-bomber attacks, "Like blood from a wounded patient - time the lifeblood of decision and action - had been oozing out of Kido Butai all morning, slowly and inexorably. Now the patient was beyond recovery" (pg 231).What follows hopes to be the specific credit for the bombs which demolish the Japanese carriers, the futile attempts to save them and a more accurate report of how they ended up on the bottom; the later two pathos, to be sure.The battle didn't end with the sinking of the Hiryu, and the remaining sinkings (on both sides) are not ignored. Similarly, the importance of the battle is examined, and in my opinion, properly defined; it did not end the war in the Pacific. It ended Japan's attempt to expand in that direction.Like Frank's "Guadalcanal: The Definitive Account of the Landmark Battle" and "Downfall", if you presume to be educated about Midway, you must read this.

This book will kill a number of your notions about this battle. In a splendidly-researched work, the authors have brought to our attention facts that have long been known in Japanese military academic circles, but not in America. They give fair treatment to the authors whose treatment of the battle form our national picture (Walter Lord, Gordon Prangue, and some others), but are relentless in debunking some widely-held myths (such as Fuchida's "5 minutes", supposedly after which, the Japs could have launched counterstrikes from aircraft already fueled and armed and spotted on the decks (they weren't), the supposedly huge advantage in forces of the Japanese that could have been engaged, and others).It's not an easy read, though the authors write well. But the level of detail (especially, the great differences in how the Japanese built and fought their carriers) makes it a task for the serious student.

Authors Parshall and Tully examine the planning, execution and popular (mis)conceptions surrounding the battle that.. turned the tide for the US in the Pacific? A miracle win? Revisionist history? The authors lay no claim to any of these.Read in conjunction with other works, it gives a fuller picture of the what and why of June 4, 1942.They examine, among other details: how long does it take the IJN to launch a full strike, IJN damage control, Yamamoto's over-ambitious plan that spread the IJN across the north Pacific, The Aleutian feint, the doctrine of the IJN, the real losses incurred by the IJN, Kido Butai's air search doctrine and practice (Amari's Tone #4 was not the weakest link), why Fuchida's portrayal of the battle that has influenced public and academic understanding of the events is considered flawed.Easy-to-read, with clear diagrams and well documented footnotes. Worth the investment.

As in the brilliant memoir Motherland, and the superb novel Is it Night or Day, Schumer Chapman deftly conveys the lasting effects of the Holocaust on ordinary people who survived Europe's butchery and their families. In Like Finding My Twin, the author compellingly reaches post-millenials and even manages to find an interactive role for them in the investigation and reportage. These young people will give you hope that the 21st century somehow will escape the horrors of the 20th. I wish that every child would read it, and that every school would teach it. Like Harper Lee in To Kill a Mockingbird, Schumer Chapman manages to tell an important political tale while writing three dimensional characters from multiple generations. As with the best juvenile literature, this is literature. It enriches adult lives and provokes a profound range of emotions worthy of a story that should continue to be supplemented in any of the media that Schumer Chapman has mastered.

A very beautiful and poignant book giving a summarized version of Fern Schumer Chapman's "Motherland" and continuing on with the story of how a class of middle school students - not much older than Fern's mother Edith had been when she fled Germany - search for Edith's long lost friend met aboard the "Deutschland" while traveling to America. Having read both "Motherland" and "Is It Night or Day?" this book is very engaging as it puts faces to names with what photos survived the Westerfeld family's tragic fate as well as giving you, the reader, a feeling of triumph for Edith as she is reunited with a kindred soul. Also accompanying Edith's story are photos of contemporary German 'artifacts' - if you will - and a backstory of what Germany was struggling through under the Third Reich. This is an important book and a necessary supplement to "Is It Night or Day?" as it provides not only an account of one of the victims of the Holocaust, but a shining example of how today's youth are compassionate towards other's sufferings. Their hard work and thoughtfulness were able to reunite two women bound as children through a terrible ordeal - these are the stories that are newsworthy today. I highly recommend reading this book in addition to Mrs. Schumer Chapman's other two books for a full understanding of one families story of what can occur when a society looks the other way. These stories need to be heard.

I just finished reading 'Like Finding My Twin', with goosebumps on my arms and found myself wiping away a few escaped tears. Two young girls leave Nazi Germany (without family) on a ship headed to America, and become sisters of the heart. Upon reaching land they are separated and go their own ways with foster families. Years and years go by and with the hard work and research of a middle school class in Illinois - they are reunited as elderly women! HUGE kudos to that class of kids who cared...such a fine example of young people today. I feel that this book needs to be required reading in every social studies class -not only in the U.S. Do not let this piece of history get swept under the rug, or become a footnote in a class. Let these students and their connection to Edith and Gerda become examples of what CAN be.

Edith Westerfeld and Gerda Katz, 12 year olds, are placed on a ship heading for America from Germany. Their parents feel they will be safer there. During their long voyage, these two girls become very best friends. After the ship arrives in America they lose track of each other.Edith's daughter, a writer, shares this information with an 8th grade class in Illinois. The students ask their teacher if they can try to reunite the two friends. After researching via the internet, they are able to find Gerda and the two friends finally come together again.There is also a lot of history recorded in this book about the Nazi control of Germany.A small book with a very large message.
