Excellent book, very informative. After reading this, I think I no longer want to do agility - it's a lot or work! I am an amateur! I want to train my border to do tricks to show off her abilities and have fun with exercise. I had no idea how much went into agility training. You need to be seriously interested in the hobby. Which this book clearly shows. I found it to be an eye opener for me.

We are at our summer home until Dec 1. I got this book and some agility equipment to help my puppy (just turned 1 by now) continue learning new skills while we were away from her trainer. The book is easy to read and very helpful in showing how to break down the training for each piece of equipment. (We are not trying to train for agility competition, just giving the dog something to do.)

I wish our dog was a better reader.

I don't necessarily want to compete with my dog, but this give a great start from which to start. I am just looking at a possible new, additional way to focus her to my instruction, a new way to play and a new physical activity to wear her out without necessarily going to the dog park. This fits the bill!

Love this book. Concise and informative. Lots of helpful tips which as a beginner I desperately need. I just wanted to get to try for fun with new standard poodle pup. Great stimulus for her and for keeping me in shape. Keeping up is the real issue 😊 As an avid reader I would highly recommend this book. Also like it has instructions and tips for building own agility equipment. Loved the price point as well.

We love this book! This has given my dog and me some wonderful drills to improve our agility game before we move onto an intermediate’s class. The information is very well organized and is clear and easy to understand. I’ve found that it follows what we’re learning in class and throws in a few additional ideas for when we’re practicing on our own. I’d recommend this book over the other books on dog agility that I own.

This book is not only great for starting agility but it's also good for training in general. I have always enjoyed training my dogs but I've been able to take it to another level using some of the techniques and guidelines laid out by Leach. The layout and photos look nice and it's enjoyable to read. There is really a lot of preliminary training required though, so if you haven't done much training with your dog or you have a puppy, you will quickly realize that you have your work cut out for you. I had anticipated jumping into the actual agility training but it seems that several months of preparation are in order. All in all a great tool for training your companion, whether they end up being an agility trial runner or just a well-behaved dog.

It works! Just trained my schichon , your basic house dog, to jump and go through the tunnel, with snacks of course. :) Its fun family entertainment when the grandparents come over.

GEN Moore's statements about those who fought on the other side definitely struck home and drove me to add one, of many, similar experiences.Short Bio; I did two tours in country doing various jobs including Naval Advisor and wound up marrying the USN Medical Officer's Vietnamese Civilian interpreter(who was also a member of the local Popular Forces) That required, finishing my enlistment, getting out of the Navy after 8 years 11 months and returning to Viet Nam as a civilian. Less than a year after returning to Viet Nam, my wife and I were part of the evacuation of Saigon (18 April 1975). We've been in contact with her family since 1976 and started visiting Viet Nam in 1992, bought a house there in 1997 and have retired here. My Vietnamese is serviceable.Through a quirk of fate my wife's brother and the sister of a Vietnamese COL, now GEN, got married and I wound up with a good friend and Vietnamese GEN-in-Law. Last year, the GEN's wife's father and former high ranking South Vietnamese Officer died. I was asked as a family member, American Viet Nam War Vet and retired Sergeant(ARNG) to attend the funeral and to please wear my U S Army retired Cap to honor the service of the GEN's father-in-law and former enemy as I hadn't brought my Army uniform to Viet Nam.Just remembering, brings a tear to my eye. If you want to understand the soul of a soldier. GEN Moore got it right. I just had to add one more story.

"We Are Soldiers Still" is the continuation of the stories of the men of the 1st of the 7th and the 2nd of the 7th Cav and how they continued their lives after those fateful days in the Ia Drang Valley in November of 1965. This journey essentially will bring the hoped for closure of these combatants who still to this day carry the baggage of the actions they took and the horrors ever resultant of such combat. General Moore and Joe Galloway take several trips back to Vietnam where they meet with their former enemies who included General Giap, General Man and General An who in fact was the commander of the forces who fought Galloway's unit in the battle of the Ia Drang Valley. After many attempts to visit the Ia Drang Valley, the Vietnamese government finally acquiesced and a small group of veterans along with Joe Galloway from the 1st of the 7th and 2nd of the 7th Cav spent a whole day and night at the sacred battle site. They walked the battlefield with their former enemies retelling old combat stories In fact with a little scheming General Moore got to spend the whole night at the battle site with his veteran friends and his journalistic buddy Joe Galloway. A great deal of thought and discussion through interpreters gave much light as to what really happened on those fateful days in the Valley. During this meaningful series of discussions a bond of professional respect and yes even friendship was realized. The healing powers of the years and the realization that the men on both sides were just doing their soldierly duties, made them realize that their enemies were human just like they were. Later upon further persuasion General Moore and Joe Galloway visited the battlefield of Dien Bien Phu. General Giap further discussed why the Americans refused to learn the lessons of the mistakes the French made in the French-Indo China War. Frankly I do believe General Moore who was fully educated in the readings of Bernard Fall already knew the consequences of the actions taken by the USA. He knew all to well!!! General Moore gives us his theories of leadership and yes he gives us a bird's eye view of what he thought of the war in Vietnam. No spoilers here, you have to read the book for that. But what I will say about these tenants of leadership and his take of the wars in Vietnam and Iraq are what I also firmly believe in. Moore along with Galloway have written a follow-up book which is just as good as the first book. In saying that, usually follow-up books are just a rehash, not here with this great read. Please read it, and see the basic and good principles which are indeed common sense and seem easy to do, but in actuality living these principles takes a great deal of discipline and no fear of failure.

LTG Moore and Joe Galloway have written the perfect sequel to "We Were Soldiers Once... and Young" and also brought closure to the Battle of the Ia Drang Valley. As a Vietnam veteran who served in the Central Highlands, I reflect on my fallen comrades every day, and although I teared up several times while reading "We Are Soldiers Still," the book was therapeutic.Having served for 30 years, I understand the importance of a supportive spouse and the positive impact she can have on families. It is the families who suffer the most in war. In combat, a soldier has a mission on which to focus and a surrogate family (a band of brothers), but at home there is an empty seat at the table and the gnawing uncertainty about the safety of a loved one. Julie Moore was truly a hero.I could also relate to how LTG Moore acquired the pith helmet. In 1993, while I was attending the Indian National Defence College, a Vietnamese colonel was on the course. COL Thuan had been drafted in 1969 (the same year I had graduated from The Citadel) after obtaining a degree in chemistry in the Soviet Union. We became best friends, and when we exchanged gifts at the end of the course, he presented me with his army pith helmet which I have prominently on display.The section on Rick Rescorla was especially poignant. Rick's courage at the Ia Drang Valley and his selfless sacrifice on 11 September 2001 serve as an inspiration to us all.The chapter, "Lessons on Leadership," should be required reading for all officers and is probably where the book should have ended. Although I am extremely loath to offer up any criticism, I felt that attacking, even though it was deserved, President George W. Bush and members of his administration for their gross mishandling of two wars detracted from the book as a whole. The final chapter, "On War," may have been better without those comments."We Are Soldiers Still" deserves a place in the library of every professional soldier and military historians.

It's 20 years too late for me to have been saved from all the malarke I put up with in graduate school, but better late than never. I just wish I'd known about this book when it came out.

A necessary read for anyone trying to understand post-modernism. Using Ockham's Razor as a guide as any scientist should, this book clearly in concise clear wording brings out the contradictions of post-modernism including an analysis of its need to reject the principle of non-contradiction.

Humorous and tragic, illuminating and infuriating. A guide for our “post-truth” times and the masturbation fantasies that neutered the left. Or, why a feminist critique of quantum gravity isn’t worth reading, or writing.

Although this is an important book it is not a very enjoyable one to read for the simple fact that the authors felt compelled to quote at length from some of the most disfigured and meaningless jumbles of words that I have ever seen sewn together in the guise of sentences.A major portion of the book is given over to reproductions of original 'postmodernist' sources that ramble for pages on end, with trifling comments by the authors on how the different scientific concepts have been misinterpreted or misused. However, the long barrage of academic verbiage is such manifest nonsense to begin with that there is little left for the sagacity of Sokal and Bricmont to say.There are only so many ways to call a fraud a fraud, so many ways to point to a syntactic confusion of adjectives and say, 'this is gibberish.'The reason for the extensive quantity of quoted material, the authors explain, is that they do not want to be accused of misrepresenting the sources, or cherry-picking their quotations. This may be an admirable intention but it does not make the situation any less painful for the reader who is forced to slog his way through the sentences.If a reader is not convinced of the absurdity of the postmodern examples within the first two sentences of a quotation, they probably so completely lack the discriminating facility that another twenty pages will not do them any more good.Much more instructive were the sections between the criticisms of the individual postmodern authors, that dealt more broadly with the roles of science and reason in the humanities and politics. Despite what other reviewers have said, there is nothing in these parts which does not seem to me to be thoroughly reasonable and correct.Most incomprehensible is how anyone could have ever taken these postmodernist authors seriously in the first place - how entire segments of the academic world could have so completely taken leave of their senses as to give even one of these imposters an academic post - let alone legions of them spanning several generations.By sheer chance, I recently ran into this comment by Jonathan Swift which seems to have some bearing on the situation:"There are certain common Privileges of a Writer,the Benefit whereof, I hope, there will be no Reason to doubt;Particularly, that where I am not understood, it shall be concluded,that something very useful and profound is coucht underneath." (1704)

Alan Sokal and Jean Bricmont analyze and critique the use, or rather misuse, of scientific language by the postmodernists. Sokal and Bricmont argue that these postmodernists use scientific concepts and terminology out of context and also target the notion of epistemic relativism (the notion that modern science is no more than a myth or social construction). I liken the postmodernists to Deepak Chopra in their use of such language as pseudo-profundity to support obscure theoretical arguments. Alan Sokal rose to notoriety in the debates around postmodernism a couple decades ago with his famous hoax article “Transgressing the Boundaries: Toward a Transformative Hermeneutics of Quantum Gravity.” As Sokal and Bricmont note, “the article was accepted and published. Worse, it was published in a special issue of Social Text devoted to rebutting the criticisms levelled against postmodernism and social constructivism by several distinguished scientists. For the editors of Social Text, it was hard to imagine a more radical way of shooting themselves in the foot.” In Fashionable Nonsense, Sokal and Bricmont study the texts of a handful of the most prominent postmodernists and social constructivists: Jacques Lacan, Julia Kristeva, Bruno Latour, Jean Baudrillard, and Gilles Deleuze. Sokal and Bricmont do a wonderful job at revealing the abuse of science present in postmodernist texts. Postmodernism is not scientific, indeed it is deeply ideological, as Sokal and Bricmont show in the epilogue while focusing on the political angle. In terms of a general critique of postmodernism, this is a classic and well worth reading. I’ll end my review of this work with one last quote from Sokal and Bricmont: “Postmodernism has three principal negative effects: a waste of time in the human sciences, a cultural confusion that favors obscurantism, and a weakening of the political left.” As postmodernism has taken over many areas in the social sciences, critiques such as this are very much necessary.

About the Author

Helen Adams Keller was born in West Tuscumbia, Alabama, the elder daughter of Arthur Henley Keller and Kate Adams Keller. When but a toddler at 19 months of age, she fell ill with what could have been scarlet fever or meningitis and shortly after, lost her sight and hearing. The impact this had on a child barely two years old is difficult to imagine as communication was all but lost to her. At seven years of age, with the help of Anne Sullivan, the teacher from the Perkins Institute for the Blind who was to transform her life, Helen learnt to communicate with those around her. Anne Sullivan, herself visually impaired, opened up the world to Helen, first by fingerspelling words into her hand, then by teaching her to lip read by placing one hand lightly over the speaker's lips. Helen went on to learn to speak, to read braille and to interpret sign language with her hands - and even discovered she could enjoy music by feeling the rhythmic vibrations of the beat. From her early isolating years of silence and darkness, Helen Keller emerged as a world-famous speaker and author of twelve published books and several articles. She was the first deaf-blind person to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree and was subsequently awarded many honorary degrees. In 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson conferred on her the Presidential Medal of Freedom, one of the USA's highest civilian honours.  A stalwart campaigner for women's suffrage, birth control, socialism, labour rights and pacifism, she also promoted and helped establish institutions for the deaf and blind. The first (silent) film made about her in 1919 was called Deliverance and this was followed by many other movies and television serials. Keller was well travelled, both within the USA and around the world, meeting US presidents, other national leaders, famous actors and writers and people involved in the work she championed. The inventor and scientist, Alexander Graham Bell, whose work in acoustics and elocution underpinned his endeavours with the deaf, was a lifelong friend and co-advocate. The Story of My Life is dedicated to him. Helen Keller's autobiography chronicles her life from a child to a young woman of twenty-two years.

Wow, this cookbook nails it! I pre-ordered because I know the quality of Kate Bowler's stuff.. Love her blog. The cookbook just arrived! I ended up reading it as if it was a novel. I could hear her voice coming through the pages. I found Kate's notes and explanations super-helpful (example, laying out the whys, hows, and what you need for a full-on clam bake. That recipe would NOT work with just the standard ingredients list).She has lots of fancy-looking recipes, but the ingredients and preparation all seem completely do-able for me, the ever-burning-toast chef. That seem to be the whole point of Domestikatedlife.com. Kate's whole lifestyle blog is full of "fancy-looking" stuff, but none of it ends up being over-involved or complicated. I'm NOT buying special pans or one ingredient sold only in bulk that I'll never use again. This cookbook is made for me.I love that it's written with whole menus! Honestly, I am more likely to make individual recipes bc I don't have the food-charisma that Kate seems to possess... but that's OK. Everything looks absolutely delicious. PUMPKIN BUTTER - need I say more?! My only disappointment is that the cookbook arrived on a Monday. I don't have time to do anything with it until next weekend. I'll survive.I plan to buy this in bulk for Christmas and hostess gifts. It is so unlike all of my other cookbooks.

I’ve only had this book for a few days but I’ve spent hours pouring over the gorgeous photos. It’s been difficult to decide which recipes to try first—- I’m not a skilled cook and yet these recipes are simple to follow. The pizzas are on the top of my list — each one looks incredible and I’m amazed at how the author created flavor combinations I’ve overlooked for years. Immediately after getting the book I made the chocolate chip cake, which is sure to become a family favorite. Get your hands on a copy of this timeless series of recipes and fool everyone into thinking you’re a skilled cook!!

This is such a great addition to my cook book collection! Being from New England, I'm used to seeing the same classic recipes but here the author puts a unique and fun spin on the classics. It's fun hearing her traditions and inspirations. I like how it is organized by season and type of event - I wouldn't be able to pull off a full menu like these for my events but many are easy enough for even me to figure out (especially with the helpful tips). My favorite to make was the 'Farmer's market pasta' and 'prosciutto cantelope and mint salad'. I'm going to try the baked cheese straws at a Friendsgiving party and I need to try the root veggie soup on the next cold day. Great read and fun blog to follow! Bought one for my sister in law for Christmas because she wants to host more events like these!

In a world where presentation means just as much as taste (looking at you, Instagram) Kate will give you the behind the scenes tips to feel like a food blogger without breaking the bank or too much of a sweat. She takes away all of the hesitation behind entertaining by showcasing that high-end tools and fancy cooking skills are not required to prepare a crowd-pleasing meal. Charming New England recipes that are classy enough to awe but not pretentious. Purchasing more for Christmas and Hostess gifts!

I love the organization of this cookbook. The recipes look fairly easy to make and the final product is so beautiful in each photo. You can clearly see that Kate Bowler has put her heart and soul into this book. While there are plans for all major holiday entertaining menus, all these recipes can be made any time of the year. Kate's ability to make a table display beautiful goes without saying. The photographs in this book are outstanding! I would purchase the book for the photographs alone but here you get these scrumptious recipes too! I can not wait to make everything in this cookbook. If you enjoy cooking, this cookbook is a "MUST HAVE" in any cookbook collection.

This is a great cookbook written in a way that most cookbooks don’t. Everything is grouped for party planning with different themes and seasons, with anecdotes and suggestions on how to host without a hitch. This will spice up the basic and boring holiday menus that you always see every year, and everything is so doable even for a beginner cook. Love this book!!

I received this cookbook and haven't stopped reading it. It not only provides wonderful ideas for entertaining, her recipes are delicious. I haven't stopped trying her recipes (and tips). It's beautifully written too. I love hearing all the stories of her growing up with her only real teachers in the kitchen . . . her grandmothers, Ida and Anne. I can picture here there with a step stood stirring and chopping along with them. Beautiful! Thank you Kate.
