The book suggests several approaches none of which jived with my personality, I am ranking it as Okay read as education of what approaches sales people might be using dealing with you. The first approach the author suggests is first asking for something outrageous, expecting a no response, and only after that asking for something that you really want. I did not like this approach based on how I would react to such flow of the conversation. When someone asks for something outrageous (especially a salesman trying to make a deal), I end the negotiations immediately. My time is too valuable to deal with someone who is not reasonable. Other suggestions such as establishing a similarity or using guilt sounded more likely to be successful.Ali Julia review

I work in sales more or less. This book was very important and great for teaching me the basics and roots of connecting with people. Its a very easy read without being overwhelming. I will be looking into authors other books as well.Thank you

I mean its a two dollar book, but I wasn't too impressed, but that's probably more my fault. I found Principles of Persuasion by Robert Cialdini much more substantive, but that's perhaps an apples to oranges comparison.

Learned a few tricks here.

I wish I had grown up knowing some of these secrets and maybe some of my earlier interactions in life would have been less stressful...now I know

This a very quick and entertaining book. Is enjoyable and very helpful for studying the manipulators in our live. I really recommended .

#115,849 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I bought several Spectrum books to help my kids with bridging gaps in knowledge and to help them transition to homeschooling (I have another curriculum I will be using). While I am not using this particular book just yet, spectrum books, in general, are clear, concise and logical to adults and kids alike. Each lesson starts with a pretest and will really help determine where your child needs help. This particular book is really just a supplement to curriculum as it only has word problems and relies on previous knowledge on how to compute and execute a particular type of math problem (like percents, ratios, metric conversions, line plots etc). In my opinion, the first 33 pages match well to their 5th grade math workbook. Pages 34-roughly 53 match to their 6th grade workbook, and the rest are really 7th grade and up. Do not let my breakdown deter you. My rising 7th grader who is struggling with math, hasn't really been exposed to many of the problems found in this book despite her having survived public school common core 4-6th grade curriculum. Right now, going into 7th she would struggle through this book. I think even an advanced math 7th grade student would find this book challenging. Here is why: One of the reasons I love these Spectrum books is because they provide REAL world content. For example, on page 30, the lesson has word problems relating to "Simple Interest" (Depositing money into a savings account and calculating interest earned after one year based on percentage and time). You can't do this problem and solve for the answer unless you have a solid understand of the math AND the concept. I have never seen any core curriculum come home with this type of content. So while the math lessons rely on knowledge at an earlier level, it encourages your child to really think about solving the problem instead of worrying how to do the math. I say it offers review, but that is sort of an understatement for the reasons stated above. The next "finding percents" lesson talks about Bill ordering supplies for his family store...The content is not dumbed down and it makes sense to both parents and children as a result. It offers a way to teach your child how to APPLY what they have learned in a regular curriculum. So note - this book does not necessarily teach the math needed for the problems. It offers a way to apply various learned concepts to everyday problems. My kids CAN NOT work through these books on their own. That is NOT the fault of how the books are written/constructed. The information is scaffolded well in all the books, but I guarantee your kids will have questions how to do various problems since pieces of the content are just not offered in a general math curriculum. I find that using the Math 5 book (and working up) is helping to effectively prepare and teach my kids how to use this book when they are ready. I would like to point out that the entire book is not going to be impossibly hard either. If your child is an 8th grader, this would serve as a solid review. If you child is rising 7th, this book will have content they need to master and serve as a nice supplement for their school year.

I'm very excited to use this book as a foundation for my RTI class this upcoming year! The lessons are aligned to standards and aren't overly complicated. There are approximately 5 questions per lesson, and also includes pretests and post tests for every chapter, a mid-book test, and a final test. Answer keys included and a data tracking page for students.

Has incorrect answers and some wording is incorrect and makes the problem more confusing. I read the word problem with my child and I interpreted the problem incorrectly. An example problem is as follows:The recipe calls for 6 1/2 cups of flour, but Emilio plans to divide this amount by 3/4 because he is serving fewer people. How much flour will he use? What makes the word problem confusing is that the word divide is in there with 3/4. Dividing by 3/4 will make you use more flour. But in the same sentence, it states he is serving fewer people. I concluded that it must mean multiply by 3/4. The actual answer was 8 2/3 flour. I can see why my daughter was frustrated and confused with this word problem.

When purchasing an item I always search for great quality, great reviews, without putting a dent in my wallet. Item arrived promptly with Prime. The workbook gets the job done. My daughter has not complained that it is boring yet, though I find it to be quite dry. I am giving it a four star review based on her being happy with it, I wouldn't give it that high if I had to use it.

Good starting point to make sure that your child is prepared. The word problems aren't convoluted with bad wording, too much information, or misdirection of what is actually wanted for the solution (i.e. a simulation of real-life problems that today's math emphasizes.) For such, I'm still looking.

good book but way too easy for 7th grader if the kid is good at math. It’s even not challenging for my 5th grader.

I actually liked this as a summer review. I work with my daughter on math in the summers, and this was pretty good.

As expected. Will help my son tp master his 8-th grade math and independent, critical thinking.

Have you ever eaten a decadent slice of cheesecake, only to finish and think, "Man, I could really go for some vegetables right about now"?If not, let me introduce you to Stephen Guise and the concept of mini habits. The idea, as conceptualized in this book, is not to take an approach of deprivation and radical change, but to make small, incremental, consistent changes that ultimately result in a permanent, healthy lifestyle. Stephen (can I call him Stephen?) is upfront from the beginning: this is not a journey of quick fixes, rapid weight loss, and cleanse diets. This is about working with the brain's natural resistance to change by fooling it into thinking you're not asking much from it. And really, you're not. If your goal is to do one push-up a day, you will find yourself down on the ground much faster than if your goal is to do 20. And once you are down there, you will do some more. It's human nature. The hard part, the decision to do a thing, is over at that point. And even on your worst day, even if you really only can do one, you've still made some forward momentum and reinforced that daily habit.I only finished this book a couple of weeks ago, but I have already seen the changes happen. The most brilliant stroke was in never making a food craving off limits, no matter how ridiculously unhealthy. Instead, he encourages a movement toward healthy food, a letting go of the binary way we think about eating (''I'm going to eat healthy'' vs ''I'm going to eat badly.'') As he says in his book, you know what's better than three slices of pizza? Three slices of a pizza and a salad. It's pithy and funny, but there is much wisdom here. When we're at a party, we don't have to decide between carrots and cookies. We can have both. And that realization is the spark of something rather profound. The more whole foods you eat, the more you incorporate them into your daily life, the more you want them for their own sake, not because you should eat better, or because you are desperate to lose weight, but because they are tasty and make you feel good.My nutrition mini habit, one recommended by Stephen, is to make one healthy food upgrade a day. That means a banana with breakfast, or a vegetable with lunch, or water instead of soda for a meal... just one healthy change from the norm. What I've found, as Stephen predicted, is most days I do far more than that. Some days I find myself concocting entire meals from scratch, just because I would rather eat that. But even on my worst days, I can make that one change and feel like I have forward momentum. Thus I have found myself eating fresh vegetables alongside leftover pizza, and a red bell pepper after I finished my cheesecake. What's remarkably different from previous attempts to shift to a healthy lifestyle is that for the first time ever, it feels like a choice. Not some hard-nosed restriction I'm trying to impose on myself for my own good, but just making choices amidst the ebb and flow of everyday life (the fact that my other mini habit is sitting down on my meditation cushion before bed doesn't hurt... I am much more mindful of my eating habits based on increased meditation alone.) Even my fast food addiction is waning, not because I've forbidden it, but because I've noted that fast food generally makes me feel like crap. I'm saving my sweet tooth for higher quality desserts, stuff I really love. I'm no longer eating with an attitude of scarcity - I shouldn't be having this, I must eat it now because I can't have it later. When there is no famine, there is never any need for feast. I ate out at three restaurants this weekend, and not once did I overeat or feel guilty about my choices. It's the difference between "What's one small thing I can do to make this healthier?" and "Screw it, I'm going to eat all the things." When you're working within a more reasonable framework, when you stop with all or nothing thinking, you make more healthy choices than you would imagine, and you don't have to fight your lazy brain to do it.

This is not just another a dieting book. it does not have recipes. It does not tell you to eliminate this or that from your diet. None of that crap. None of the usual 'you need to motivate yourself' hype. This book can simply change your life. I know - I've been dieting all my life and got nowhere, but can see how the strategies described in this book can change it forever.I'm a big fan of Stephen Guise's Mini Habit strategy to habit formation. And here he has written another book that can help people get healthier, slimmer, happier in a simplest, easiest to implement and successful way. The author applies his famous Mini Habits principles to eating habits, bypassing completely the ineffective, hyped-up mainstream dieting strategies, showing why they don;t and can't work.Diets make us fat. If we really want to lose weight, he argues, our goal should not be losing weight, but changing our behaviour And this is achievable through changing our habits, because consistency is the key to lasting behavioural change.Stephen present scientific evidence to support his claims. He also gives multiple examples of effective strategies. Do you know there are 8 ways in which you can stop drinking soda drinks? Out of them, only 1 is really about forcing yourself to stop drinking it outright. The remaining 7 are much more realistic and 'user friendly', and therefore more likely to be adhered to and - consistent!I like when he debunks some oof my 'pet hates' dieting myths of 'healthier option a.k.a. a smoothie' or a diet foods and drinks, low-fat dairy, the 'I deserve it' trick (one of my weakest points, I admit). he also gives plenty of strategies for dealing with temptations, cravings, grocery shopping, eating out, etc - and all of it realistic!Stop dieting - change your life and your weight with Mini Habits for weight loss!

I read this book. It makes a lot of sense. I stopped smoking last year, by focusing on not smoking one hour and one day at a time. I will become healthier and lose weight with the common sense strategies in this book; one hour and one day at a time. Wish me well, because that’s what I want to be. WELL

This book came out at the right time for me. People who are trying to lose weight, myself included, are often stuck in a very negative spiral of thinking about themselves. Guise's tone is so uplifting in this book, which has made a big difference to me from the first page. There is one passage that really stood out to me: "Mainstream motivational theory states that, in order to enact change, one must simply "want it more."...it's a pity that we're not motivated enough to save our own lives and live better. But wait...the weight loss industry made $64 billion in 2014. When that much money is spent on something, it means public interest is through the thermosphere...people have willingly suffered and paid money trying to lose weight, and they are still being told their desire for change isn't strong enough. That's so wrong it's criminal...People have plenty of desire, they just need a smart strategy that doesn't rely on doing the impossible."Guise is on our side! He gets it. I've never heard something like this said before. I've read other weight loss and self-help books that make you feel less than human; a lot of people just aren't patient or nice to you if you're overweight or depressed. But Guise never talks down to you. He's jovial and friendly. He jokes with you! And his ideas are so well-researched and well-reasoned that you can't help but feel hopeful.

This shows the usual diets as the sham that they are and offers habits you can adopt for a lifetime. Time will tell if it works, seems you still need a bit of motivation to change your habits. But, it makes total sense and I have hope.

Sleights of Mind explains magic tricks by telling one about the shortcuts, limits, and programming of brain (and attendant sensory systems) that facilitate such tricks. The reader needn’t be concerned that the book will spoil all the illusionists’ secrets for one. The authors carefully demarcate the beginnings and endings of spoiler sections that explicitly explain tricks. This allows a reader to skip over such sections if one doesn’t want to know the trick. I suspect few readers do skip the spoiler sections because that’s where the rubber meets the road in terms of the neuroscientific concepts being discussed. The spoiler sections are an attempt to comply with the magician’s code (the neuroscientist authors became magicians themselves) and to maintain a good relationships with the many magicians (some, like Teller or the Amaz!ng Randi, quite famous) who cooperated in the writing of the book.Over 12 chapters, the authors explain the neuroscience of how various classes of illusion work. Most of the chapters address a specific class or subclass of illusion. The first few chapters deal with visual illusions. We look at the world in what seems like crystal clarity (at least with glasses on or contacts in), but there are many limitations and gaps in our visual processing system. While it seems like we are directly seeing the world around us, in point of fact, our visual experience is a product of the brain reconstructing information that the eyes take in—and it doesn’t do it as perfectly as our brain tricks us into believing. As the authors state it, “The spooky truth is that your brain constructs reality, visual and otherwise.” Chapter 3, deals with illusion in art, which is little outside the theme of the book, but it offers an opportunity to explain some intriguing facts about how the brain and eyes work in concert. The next couple chapters (Ch. 4 and 5) deal with cognitive illusions. Just like our visual system, our conscious minds save energy by engaging in short-cuts that disguise the mind’s limits while offering the possibility of manipulation. The brain also works hard to reconcile what appear to be inconsistencies, and often this reconciliation leads us astray. Misdirection is discussed in detail. Our minds are primed to let certain actions and sensory inputs draw its attention, and humans are awful at paying attention to more than one input stream at a time. Teller explains that, “Action is motion with a purpose.” So, if one can give one’s movement a purpose (even scratching one’s chin) it will be ignored while movements seemingly without purpose are anomalous and draw attention. The authors introduce the reader to mirror neurons—the part of our brains that take observations of another’s actions and makes forecasts about that person’s intent. This system is highly hackable by magicians.Chapter 5 informs us that we aren’t as good at multitasking as we think—which is to say we completely stink at it but tend to think we are awesome multitaskers. The gorilla experiment is offered as a prime example of this situation. In the gorilla experiment, about half-a-dozen people, moving around randomly, pass a ball / balls among themselves. The subject is asked to count the number of passes. In the middle of this activity a man in a gorilla suit walks through the middle of the rapidly moving passers. When asked whether they saw the gorilla, most people say they didn’t (and those who do see the gorilla invariably offer a count of passes that is vastly off the mark.) [If this is either unclear or unbelievable, you can YouTube it.]Chapter 6 examines multisensory illusions. The quintessential example is how our brains lead us believe that the sound of a ventriloquist’s voice is coming from the moving lips of a dummy. (Also, it seems like voices are coming from the lips of actors on screen in the movies, even though the speakers are probably off to the side in the walls or ceiling.) Synesthesia (cross-wiring between senses and brain such that some people may always see the number 5 in red or hear a C-sharp in green) is introduced to the reader.Chapter 7 explores the illusions of memory. Just as with our vision and attention, our memories aren’t as indelible as they seem to be. We think we’re calling up a transcription of the events of our lives, but really we’re remembering the last remembrance of said event. This can lead to a migration / distortion of events in the same manner as the kid’s experiment whereby one whispers a phrase into the ear of the kid in the next chair and it traverses the classroom. The original sentence “The cat is on the windowsill” invariably becomes something like “Lenny Kravitz steals puppies from the till.” (Have you ever experienced a situation in which a person remembers the details of an event substantially differently from yourself even if the broad brushstrokes are the same?) Some entertainers use pneumonic tricks to convince audiences that they have supernatural mental abilities when—in fact—they have merely turned understanding of memory to their advantage.Chapter 8 considers how in-built expectations and assumptions are exploited by magicians and mentalists. Again, these methods work because our brains employ all sorts of energy-saving shortcuts. For example, our brains often do the same thing as Google’s search engine—filling in the blanks by taking advantage of one’s experience to avoid the need for costly cognitive processing.Chapter 9 explains that our “free choices” are often not so “free” as we think. One of the most disconcerting, yet intriguing, facts to come from the onslaught of brain imaging studies since the 1990’s is that our decisions are made on a subconscious level before our conscious minds are even aware the decision has been made. Prior to this, we’d always been under the misapprehension that we are consciously making all these decisions--big and small--because the conscious mind is just a big credit stealer (to be fair, the conscious mind doesn’t recognize that it’s so out of the loop in decision making.) So many of our decisions are made in predictable ways by emotional / automated responses, and mentalists use that fact to their advantage.Chapter 10 is a catchall for topics that didn’t fit into earlier chapters, including hypnosis, superstitions, and the gambler’s fallacy (i.e. the idea that a roulette number that hasn’t come up in a while [or slot machine that hasn’t paid off recently] is bound to pay soon—regardless of the probability distribution that actually rules the outcome.)The remainder of the book tells the story of the author’s try-out for a magic society and discusses the question of whether knowing the neurological and psychological roots of magic tricks will kill magic as a source of entertainment. I found the latter to be the more interesting discussion. The authors are optimistic about magic’s survival, and offer good reasons. After all, almost nobody believes that magicians are conducting supernatural activities [not even people who take some wildly unsubstantiated beliefs as givens.] Even knowing how the tricks work doesn’t create the ability to see through the tricks because so many of the factors that magicians exploit operate on a subconsciously programmed level, and such proclivities would have to be trained away. People who want to enjoy the spectacle of magic aren’t likely to go to the trouble of training themselves in that way.I enjoyed this book even though I’m not particularly a fan of magic—though I did find myself watching quite a few YouTube clips of the magicians mentioned in the book. If you’re interested in how one’s mind and sensory systems work, and the limitations of those systems, you’ll find this book worthwhile. If you’re into magic, you’ll like it all the more so.

A well-presented treatise on how neuro-science is revealing the how and why we perceive our surroundings as we do. If you are interested in Psychology, Neurology, and Psychiatry, you will find this book interesting. This is not a medical text, so, the average student of the mind-sciences should be able to comprehend it without difficulty. For example, I have a Master's Degree in Clinical Social Work and I had no difficulty with the concepts. The useful novelty of this book is that the authors recognized how the profession of magical-entertainment is all about tricking the perceptions of the audience. So, by bringing together what neuro-science shows us about the how and why we perceive as we do and contrasting it with magical techniques, we gain a clearer picture of how our minds work. Fascinating!

You'd think magicians could learn a thing or two from neuroscientists, but this book is all about how two neuroscientists are learning what to study and why from professional magicians. Sleights of Mind is a fun layman's read of how our vision works and how our minds interpret what we see. I wasn't a magic fan nor a neuroscience fan when I started this book, but I am now! I learned why, when I edit my writing, I miss so many errors. I don't see them! My mind is conjuring up what the words are supposed to be, because that's how our minds have evolved to be more efficient. We have a limited range of focus when we see, too, and surrounding neurons are "turned off."I finished this book with a greater respect for magicians not only for their skill, but also for what they've known for ages about the human mind, things neuroscientists are just discovering. I also learned, if I'm ever on a jury, not to put too much weight into eye witnesses' testimonies. Nothing can deceive us like our own minds!

While this book is not simple simply put this book is about how our mind perceives (underscore perceives) the physical world around us primarily through the integration of our visual system in combination with other systems. The primary way that this is explored is, voila! through the art and spectacle of magic (but strictly defined as those practitioners who deal in illusions, sleights, and memory and expectational manipulations; this is not to be confused by the hucksters who claim supernatural power or innate abilities to seemingly defy reality).I was tempted to end my review at that summary sentence but...nah, I'll go on. "Sleights of Mind" was researched and written by a scientific husband and wife duo (Susana Martinez-Conde, Ph.D., director of the Laboratory of Visual Neuroscience at BNI and her husband, Stephen Macknik, Ph.D., is the director of the Laboratory of Behavioral Neurophysiology at Barrow Neurological Institute) and, while many of the concepts are clear if not completely concise and the writing flows (if you don't stop and read shadowed blocks that are interesting asides about applications or examples of what they're currently talking about), the technical jargon is kept to a minimum and much of what is said could have been said in shorter or condensed form. But here we have what the duo no doubt experienced repeatedly and highlight and that is that magic and illusions are just as much about showmanship and misdirection as they are about the tricks of the trades themselves. As such Macknik and Conde include healthy portions of schtick, describing in detail quite a few illusionists from the way that they dress and present themselves to their audiences visually as well as mannerisms that they employ and jokes that they use. While I was expecting that the most interesting part of the book would be finding out about how our brain works it turns out that the discussions of the magicians/ illusionists was for me the most interesting.Conde & Macknik also go to lengths to describe how the magic is accomplished, giving many "spoiler alerts". Perhaps it was just me but I couldn't wrap my head around many of the tricks that they were describing as I couldn't adequately visually picture them based on the descriptions. I wonder if other people had the same experience?Overall I was very glad to have purchased this book. I work in the field of psychology with adolescents and some of the information herein has been helpful in that it can help me point out more concrete ways in which their information systems can foul them (and others) up and how we can possibly avoid this sometimes by increasing our awareness of such phenomena. But I didn't come away having learned anything really substantially new about neuroscience (now about magic, I did) and in that I was a little disappointed. Still, an enjoyable read, not overly technical, and fairly highly recommended.* One last note: Though not their primary purpose in writing this book Macknik & Conde present themselves not just as skeptics of the highest order, demythologizing "magic", but as worshippers of the material sciences and devout believers that there are no actual supernatural or spiritual (as in suggesting another realm or reality outside of the material world); they believe that through dedicated study and practice the secrets of the universe can be unlocked and that there are no secrets outside of the material universe. They don't state this outright anywhere but these assumptions are presented clearly enough in a number of ways and are taken for granted by the authors. This is not surprising. But if you are a believer (you have a religious worldview of some sort, such as being Muslim or Buddhist or Christian, or if you simply believe in a non-materialistic spiritual realm and are strongly influenced by horoscopes or psychics) you might be set back or bothered a little by some of their presentations or assertions.

I don’t think it’s hyperbolic to call Carlos Hernandez’ Sal & Gabi Break the Universe a mold-breaker. Any expectations you bring to the book based on the publishing line it’s a part of, the genre it falls into, or the age reader it’s aimed at, are likely to be mistaken. The main characters also don’t fall into expected roles from similar stories.Rick Riordan’s various series have been mythology-based, and most of the initial titles in the Rick Riordan Presents line have stayed in that mold while lifting up the voices of marginalized peoples to tell stories from their own cultures. In Sal & Gabi, Hernandez makes full use of his heritage, but there’s almost no mention of mythology or gods. Instead, the author immerses us in modern Cuban-American language and cuisine, and … sleight-of-hand magic? Yep. Sal’s goal is to be a different kind of hero: a magician who brings joy to sick kids stuck in hospital just like the magician who did it for him. There’s no demi-god lineage, no monsters waiting to attack. The little bit of the past that impacts Sal’s present is not a mythological past but rather his own.In fact, there are no fantasy/magic elements at all other than Sal’s sleight-of-hand. The book is, I think, the first under the RRP umbrella to be science fiction. But rather than the far-future we often see in MG and YA books, this is a near future that is recognizably our own world with some hints of advanced (if not openly available) technology. And rather than dystopia, we get loving families, helpful adults, and a sense of community and hope. Even at the book’s darkest moments, and there are a couple, I didn’t feel despondent or mired down.Hernandez also manages to avoid one of the problems I struggle with in the few middle-grade books I’ve read, including the early Percy Jackson books (as much as I loved them): his characters act and sound like thirteen-year-olds. So many MG characters either read much younger than their supposed age, or much older. Reading the banter between Sal, Gabi, and their classmates, I felt like I was listening to my own nieces and nephews. At first, the characters seem like they’re going to fall into traditional roles: Sal as the titular chosen one, Gabi as the too-smart-for-her-peers outcast, Yasmany as the bully and “big bad.” But here again Hernandez subverts expectations. Yes, Sal can do something remarkable (rip holes between universes and pulls things – and people – into his own), but he’s not a Chosen One. Nobody is spouting prophecies about what he can and will do, and even the most scientifically-adept characters in the book don’t know why Sal can do what he can do, or what effect it will have on the fabric of the multiverse. Gabi is smart and sassy and a little bit feared, but also well-liked by her peers. Yasmany starts out as the bully, but he’s neither a snob nor a jerk, and his character shows immediate depth that characters like Draco Malfoy only wish they could have exhibited in the first book of a series. Not only is Yasmany not the “big bad,” the book doesn’t have a “big bad” at all! It’s so refreshing to read a MG/YA book where the conflict is situational rather than staged, and where the tension comes from wondering what new situation is going to complicate things rather than wondering when the hero is going to punch the villain. Other than the initial Sal-Yasmany encounter, which never gets as violent as it threatens to, I’m not sure there’s a single fight scene in the entire book.Sal, Gabi, Yasmany, and their classmates enjoy school, are creative without being falsely eccentric, and are polite even when they’re arguing. Sal’s and Gabi’s parents are involved in their kids’ lives rather than absent, curious and supportive without being pushovers. The other authority figures (principal, custodian, teachers, nurses) are likeable and engaged rather than stern and unyielding roadblocks. Again, there’s that sense of family and community, with good (but not untroubled) relationships almost all around. And people actually apologize when they make mistakes or false assumptions.Anyone who has heard Carlos read any portion of this book at various conventions and reading programs over the past year or two will not be surprised at the amount of humor the book holds. Everything from slapstick to fart jokes to more intricate wordplay is present, but the characters never engage in humor that is denigrating, embarrassing or vulgar. Even the snark and sarcasm teens are known for is delivered gently. Finally, I have to acknowledge how empowering it has to be for Cuban-American kids to read this book and “hear” their own language, the beats and rhythms and slang. There were even bits of dialogue completely in Spanish with no direct translation into English. I don’t read or speak Spanish but was able to pick up context clues and go back later to look up translations, but I was happy those moments exist in the text, because they will reach the intended audience and make those young readers smile and feel represented. Also: the sequel has been announced, and I cannot wait to find out how Sal & Gabi Fix the Universe and what happens before they do.

I love this book. It has been a long time since I carried a big 400-page hardcover with me everywhere I went so I would have more time to read - but this book is that sort of book. It is also the sort of book that I wanted to slow down reading as I neared the end and realized how long I might have to wait to read more about Sal & Gabi and their parade of family and friends. One part Little Brother snark, one part Wrinkle in Time universe weirdness, two parts clever teens finding their way through the challenges life throws our way. I enjoyed learning more about Cuban-American culture. I particularly loved the way the author slowly reveals how things work in the universe he has created.Sal & Gabi will make you laugh out loud - and might even make you wipe away a tear or two. You are in for a great ride, be you an adult with a soft spot for middle-grade fiction (like me) or a kid looking for something new to read.

Sal arrives at his new school in Miami and ends up a frequent visitor in the principal's office. Gabi shows up in the office to represent Yasmany, the other student involved. Perpetual hijinx ensue with an undercurrent of sadness. Sal's mom died yet still "visits." Sal can open portals into other universes. Gabi is the only one outside his family who knows. Sal's school is a very special place where kids can pursue their passions and help each other. The Miami setting with Spanish speaking characters adds the perfect aura. This book is unforgettable. Luckily there will be a sequel. Thanks NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC. You have a winner!

Great book!! Fabulous author!! 😍

Sal didn't mean to punch a hole in the universe and put a dead chicken in Yasmany's locker.Oh, wait, yeah, he did.Meet Sal. He's a lot of things. The new kid. Cuban-American. Diabetic. Aspiring magician. Lover of Skittles. And he can access other dimensions. How did that happen? Well, let's just say it all started after his Mami Viva turned into Mami Muerta...Now meet Gabi. Student council president. Overachiever. Loves t-shirts with quotes and funky barrettes. School paper editor. Future lawyer. Sal's worst enemy turned bestie. How did that happen? Well, let's just say it took a little bit of breaking the universe...Sal and Gabi Break the Universe is a fun, fantastic adventure full of friendship, family, love, and a whole lot of yummy Cuban cooking. All of the characters are amazing and you can't help but love them. Yasmany, the school bully and receiver of the above dead chicken? You'll love him by the end of the book. Principal Torres, whose office Sal has ended up in every day of his first week at his new school? Wonderful and definitely deserves a raise. Papi and American Stepmom? You'll want them--along with all of Gabi's dads--to be your parents, too. It's basically a slice-of-life book, coupled with alternate realities that Sal can access, leading to wacky adventures for all. And, maybe, lead to a miracle or two.In addition, I want to make a quick note about Gabi, and something that endeared her to me. Though also Cuban-American and studies more than she breathes, she doesn't understand Spanish, leading to Sal to translate for her at times. I think that this is incredibly important for the Latino kids who weren't raised speaking Spanish for whatever reason (like, say, my kid brother, who is adopted from Guatemala and barely even knows Dora-level Spanish--not for a lack of trying on the part of our parents and myself). Not knowing Spanish doesn't make these kids any less Latino than their fluently bilingual peers, and highlights diversity of families and lifestyles.
