While simple in terms of plot, it is so deeply layered in complexity and inference. The illustrations were rendered with depth and a quiet, moving emotion. A must read. As child ages, reading this story year after year, his/her understanding of what this book is about will only deepen and grow.

I love the way this book interweaves issues around diversity, culture and immigration throughout the story without grabbing onto platitudes or morals. While I think the latter is necessary and can be found in many other works, this work adheres to a personal story where we absorb many positive messages about family values, acceptance and equality without being told to do so. Phi tackles his story with such poetic, truthful language, my very verbal toddler and I are longing for more and I know this story will grow with us for several more years.

This is a great book for discussion for kids of all ages. It's a bit of a quiet story, but there's a lot to think about while reading. For my students, going fishing is typically seen as a fun activity, so seeing this father and son fish so their family can have food to eat will be an eye-opening experience. I often use the discussion prompts: What's in the book?, What's in your head?, and What's in your heart? from the book Disrupting Thinking by Kylene Beers and Robert Probst. A Different Pond is a wonderful book to use for this type of discussion.

This is a beautiful book that follows a boy and his father on an early-morning fishing trip. Though the trip is a bonding experience, it is also a multi-layered journey where the boy gains insight into what his father has lost as a Vietnamese refugee and his struggles as a man working two jobs to support his family in Minneapolis. It's a quiet yet powerful book with beautiful illustrations.

A gentle yet powerful story of family and duty

The original book sent and the replacement both have defects. The first one had several pages that were not cut at the top & two pages that seemed to be glued together. The replacement had two pages glued together. Originally this was to be a gift, but I'm not going for #3, so I"ll just keep the book to read to children in my family. I will now think twice before ordering any ore books from Amazon.

My non-reader was struggling with the selections on the summer reading list and hated the first book read. I suggested this one as the second because it sounded interesting and looked easier to read than a novel. The kiddo loved it! It sparked discussions of all sorts and was a big hit.

Really awesome book! I bought this for my nature loving 6 yr old. He loves to read it together-although some of it is definitely for older kids so we skip over those parts. My husband-not a book lover by any means-even picked it up and looked through it. The whole time he kept saying he wished he had books like this one when he was a kid:)

I bought this book for my 10 year old nephew and my 8 year old son saw it and had to have it also. They both loved it. It's a very nice looking hardcover book with nice illustrations. A year later and my son still picks it up occasionally and reads through it. He gave it 5 stars, so I do too.

I wasnt expecting this to be a hard cover book. I missed that in the description, but was pleasantly surprised upon delivery. My 9 yo son just cant put this book down. He spent the entire day trying to tell me how he would wrestle an alligator, escape from quicksand, or protect himself from a grizzly attack. This book is WAY cool!!!

We used this as part of a homeschool geography program, but my kids (especially my 11-yr old) keep reaching for it for non-school reading. Lots of different, short topics, so it can be picked up and enjoyed over and over, with big breaks in between.

The book can educate, entertain and excite kids and adults alike. Many interesting facts and topics, spiced with history and good illustrations, teaching useful skills in the very attractive way.

This is a small book that packs a huge punch when traveling. Background on the neighborhoods, insight into the history of the city, as well as tips on some lesser known destinations. Highly recommended.

I read this on my flight out to SF last year and it was the best way to prepare for the adventure that is San Francisco. Even Karl, the SF fog, became a friend as I learned about this magical city through the eyes of the locals that have made it the wonder that it is today.

Highly recommend. Unique guide with hand-drawn illustrations and neat facts about the city and its locals. Loved the map of where the chefs eat in town - such a cool, live-like-a-local approach to a travel guide.

The Wildsam team did a fantastic job with this guidebook. San Francisco can seem overwhelming when trying to plan a visit, but this guide helped me to not only know where to go but gain a deeper understanding of the City and all it has to offer. Definitely would recommend this book to friend and family!

Excellent detailed biblical commentary. Wide source of theological views for consideration with D.A. view summarizing in most cases the most widely accepted literal explanation.

In the process of studying the writings of John I kept seeing various commentators making reference to Carson. I have a friend who is also a big fan of Carson's works so both of these things influenced me to buy this work. This book actually exceeded any expectations I had. I cannot decide what is the best work on John but it is certainly between F.F. Bruce and this one.First I would like to say that Carson is very articulate and exact. He is not given to fanciful fits of imagination of clumsy exegetical comments. He is a real scholar who approaches the topic with class and sensitivity. The book started with him giving a synopsis of past hundred and fifty years of scholarship on John. He systematically deconstructs and dismantles every objection to the authorship of the Apostle John. He does this in a cool and calm manner that takes all views into account while exposing the weaknesses of the methodology espoused by Bultmann and his school of thought. This part of the work was colossal!Carson proceeds with the narrative with reserve and caution. He talks about a variety of views and usually shows their strengths and weaknesses pointing out the one he thought was most likely. He has mastery over New Testament Greek and his command of the language makes his ideas even more plausible. There are areas where he is unsure and he leaves those areas open with a few possibilities but usually he discusses why he favors one over another. He never resorts to belittling or running another view down but always proceeds with a cool-headed approach to theology.This book is unique because he achieves a strong balance. For those who are well-versed in the Gospel of John they will find this book to be a great addition to their library and will no doubt acquire some things to add to what they are already know. At the same time, it is not an overwhelming work and one could hypothetically read this book without any previous background to John's works and still walk away with valuable insights into the overall theme of John's Gospel.I would like to offer some criticism as I often do for other works but I really can't think of anything that was big enough to bring up. It is accessible, theologically sound, well argued, exhaustive, and professional all the way around. He deals with some delicate theological issues and does so without resorting to dogma like Sproul did in his work on John. Overall, this is a must for your library. I would say that this and Bruce are two of the best works out there on the subject. Carson offers great advice for young preachers who are preaching John to their people for the first time and great devotional reflections. It is a big work so be ready to labor working your way through it but it is worth it!

DA Carson is an absolute genius when it comes to gospel exposition! I have gotten through the 17th chapter of John in this book and I am nothing short of amazed at how easy it is to understand and how enjoyable it is to read. Dr. Carson has been a true blessing to me through this book and I whole heatedly recommend it to all!

The vast array of sources referenced gives the reader confidence that Dr. Carson has comprehensively interacted with the material. He is fair in his treatment of opposing interpretive views, yet definite in his own conclusions.The flow of thought is coherent and the writing style articulate, although I admit consulting my English dictionary once or twice. Because his treatment of the Greek text demonstrates scholarly precision, yet does not require knowledge of the language, I recommend this commentary to laymen and academics alike.Dr. Carson adheres to a historical-grammatical method of hermeneutics that well supports his evangelical outlook. I especially appreciate his consistent appeal to the context and logical flow of the book as a guide to judging between interpretations proposed by various commentators.Richard L. This has been incredibly helpful in writing inductive Bible studies on the book of John. I highly recommend it as a member of the clergy. What you'll find in this book is insightful and also academic. There are plenty of reviews on this book so I will end mine saying I have deeply benefitted from owning this commentary.

Excellent resource with insights into the Gospel of John. DA Carson does a good job and has a number of other commentaries one might want to add to their collection.

This is perhaps the best commentary on John for preaching and teaching purposes. While it still a choice for many scholars, it is easily accessible for preachers with less academic prowess. Carson, also, does a fine job presenting different interpretations even handedly, and sharing the strengths and weaknesses of these various positions. While I do not always agree on the position he arrives at it is a tremendous help to have the positions not accepted by the author treated fairly.

I like this because it presents the same material as the NIV commentary from a different point of view. This is more directed at scholars. I have difficulty with Carson's style of presenting differing opinions. It is not easy to follow.

A very valuable book to learn the full capabilities of the Echo Show.

Takes a while to get to things you want. Hard initially to get specific answers to verbal questions. Gets better after you've heard more about the information you want. It is still hard to get the specific wording that triggers Alexa's getting you the right info.

The book is easy to read. I learned many things that enhanced my use. In addition, I was able to modify a few calendar/sharing (on home screen) options I did not like.

Informative. Great references. Detailed explanations of features. Would recommend to those new to the Show.

Bought this to help mu mom understand her Echo and it's still too technical.Was hoping it would be very basic in language but no.

The cover is very misleading. The cover clearly shows the 2 generation but once you start reading, they just talk about the first echo show. Very disappointed.
