About the Author
Ueli Steck was born in 1976 and considered one of the world’s best extreme climbers, and the single most successful climber ever from Switzerland. At only age 17, he mastered the highest rating of difficulty in climbing (9th level in UIAA), while his most spectacular achievement was the ascent in record time of each of the three most difficult north faces of the Alps. In 2008, Steck received the Eiger Award for his mountaineering achievements, and was awarded the Piolet d’Or, the “Oscar of Mountaineering,†twice, in 2009 and again in 2014 for his first solo ascent of Annapurna. He died while on a training climb on the Himalayan peak Nuptse on April 30, 2017.

Being an avid climber and guide in all realms and disciplines as a mountaineer, Ueli had been a beacon of influence to my life for many years. In reading this book it’s timelines flooded back memories from my own exploits whilst hearing of his gargantuan achievements. The book is written with such vivid imagery and succinct clarity that you can feel his emotion at times, like when he writes about his wife you can feel the connection and love. You can see the crevasses, blue ice, seracs, pillars of stone or the massive flutes of Annapurna.This book was such a pleasurable digest for the fact that stepping into Ueli’s mind helped reinforce my love for the untamed nature of the mountain. Having gleaned characteristics from him will help me to improve my training in hopes that I may aspire as much as he did.I often still refer to him as though he’s alive, but I suppose he’ll never be forgotten so that’s not bad for a mountaineer. 🙂This is worth the read no matter who you are or what your interests are.

For anyone who has seen the numerous videos of Ueli and marveled at his speed, reading this book helps us better understand what it took for Ueli to develop the skills that set him apart. In fact, the co-author and the translator deserve kudos for bringing us a book that reads as if Ueli is personally telling you about his adventures over a cup of coffee. Ueli's passion, humility, and sense of humor that is evident in his video interviews also comes through in his book; at times, while reading, I could hear his accent and vocal inflection I know from his videos.
