This book has greatly enlightened me on so many levels in my life. To be honest, I never really thought about animal agriculture and welfare before. I appreciated the author's efforts in sharing her experience which I thought was very brave of her. In the many stories that she shared, I deeply admired her persistence especially in times when she was scared to push the boundaries to find out the truth. Being able to tell stories from various types of farming models, countries helped tell a well balanced story about the agricultural world globally. The knowledge I have gained has empowered me to want to continue learning about this topic. Sometimes, or should I say most of the times, challenges in our food and agriculture system goes unseen and unheard. This book brought light to the many harsh truths that I was not aware of especially in animal agriculture. It is well written and it definitely drew me in to her journey which was also accompanied by the research which hammered in on the issues that was discovered! My blinders are off now thanks to this book and my thinking/ investigative cap is remaining on! I definitely recommend this book to those who never thought that such a topic might be of interest to you. Take a chance on it and enlighten yourself like I did, it is worth it!

Sonia Faruqi reveals a world that most don't know exists and the few who do, choose to ignore its reality. That is the world of animal farming, if this can still be called farming and those poor beings can still be called animals. Farming has become a inhumane industrial process. Animals are seen and treated as pieces of the production process and not like living beings. As pieces, when they get damaged (sick) or are not producing, they are simply thrown away (killed). What's worse is that the farming industry as it is managed has negative effects on animal well being and health, human health, the environment and even the economy. If the industry changed its way of doing things, they would have more income. Yet the local governments turn a blind eye in this inhumane, no productive, and damaging industry. I assume because farmers support the local government in the first place. The book is well researched. Part 1 was very informative, but part 2 started to feel too repetitive and dragging. (That's why I give it 4 stars) Still, this is a book everyone should read.

I devoured this book over the weekend, I found it riveting; I just could not put it down. I wish I could give it to everyone in my life as a gift-- to people I know and love, to people I can't stand, and even to the strangers I cross paths with on the street. This is a must-read for all ages. If you are old enough to eat animals, then you are old enough to know how they are raised and treated in order to be stocked on the supermarket shelves. Sonia Faruqi shared her experiences with such color, humor, thoughtfulness, and delicacy, that even the most sensitive (like myself) are able to keep turning the pages. A truthful, yet relatable insight into the lives of farmers and the reality of cognitive dissonance most people suffer from.

Fascinating, enlightening, equally sad and hopeful. Thank you Sonia for braving the reality and writing so clearly and objectively. Thank you for not just pointing that there is a fire out there, but also an extinguisher. Its really up to us as consumers. We have to demand better. I pray your voice will reach many and encourage us all to make the changes, even small ones, to end the atrocity of factory farming. There's nothing wrong with eating meat, eggs, or dairy, but they are entitled to a decent life before the end and a humane end. I hope one day books will be written to tell how far we have come. Sincerely.

I will be thinking about some of the lessons in this book long after I read the last word. And I think that is a good thing!The author does an excellent job of putting the reader in her shoes - from being a new to the farm city girl to a weary traveler trying to make sense of it all.Docked one point because the last third of the book lost some of the punch and resonance of the beginning. But overall I highly recommend this to anyone interested in learning more about where the food on your table comes from and what it took to get it there.

It's time to give up the blissful ignorance of the story behind industrial "farming". I stopped eating meat back in the 70's when I found out about factory farm conditions and the impact not only on animal welfare but on personal and global health. I appreciate this book for the update, though very saddened to learn the story has grown exponentially worse. We need books like this! I commend the author's courage to witness what she has in order to search for answers and report back what was found, despite the industry's efforts to keep secrets.

How little we know about the agricultural system that affects all of us every day. Sonia Faruqi's incredibly brave journey to farms in 8 countries (often undercover) has insights for us all. In addition to being a great overview of the global food machine, Sonia has practical suggestions. I now shop very differently from how I used to and know what questions to ask when I buy. This book is one of a kind and is a must-read for everyone. You will never forget it.

I was looking for something that would tie my classroom management strategy neatly into a single package but have not found that magic missing piece. My school district uses several different programs (Capturing Kids Hearts, Kids at Hope, and some of the schools use Make You Day). I like to share with my students WHY it is important to Choose Kind (from the book Wonder (our first read aloud of the year). I have tried incorporating things from Whole Brain Teaching and even Kagan Strategies but it all seemed so disjointed.Until now!!! This book teaches the students about the brain and how different parts of the brain respond to different things. It teaches students how they respond to stress and why. It teaches them to recognize which part of their brain is in control and then asks them if that is truly the part that should be in charge OR if there is a better decision that they should be making.As if that is not enough, the author took the time to tie each of the lessons to CCSS standards so teachers can justify the use of it in the classroom. There are additional books (literature) you can use as read alouds to help make each topic come to life. Each unit is meant to last 2 weeks and the book is designed to be taught over the course of the year. I love how it ties in the sense and some great science lessons.This is excellent for your ADHD, Shy, and students with anger issues. I cannot wait to begin to use it this upcoming school year.

I love the ease of teaching the program however, I wish there were more visuals and/or activity ideas for the kids as well as a digital download of some lessons, videos, etc. to go along with the program

I like the curriculum, but no resources available. I went to the website and the resources are limited. It would be nice to get a code to access the handouts online and other resources to help teach the lessons. With that said, it is a great curriculum to help students learn mindfulness and kids do enjoy.

I got this curriculum just for the summer to prevent backslide of my rising 1st graders skills. I thought I'd get some ideas to couple with other basic workbooks I got. I am only a few lessons in, but I love the way it breaks down each lesson and provides ideas for hands-on work and thoughtful discussion. I must admit that I feel like I am learning just as much as my son about self-control and mindfulness. The huge poster of the brain is a big hit too!I will update this once we finish.

This curriculum is just what I need to help my fourth grade students begin to understand the way their brains work, and learn how to regulate their emotions. I love the way that it directly teaches brain science to students, and they love it too! I like the reproducible worksheets that are provided, as well as the brain facts poster. Although, I do find myself creating a lot more visuals (posters, powerpoints, etc) to supplement so that I am not just stuck reading or lecturing aloud to my students.I took one star off because the lesson plans are kind of confusing and not what I was expecting based on the description. I saw that there were 15 lessons and thought that it would be perfect to implement lessons once or twice a week. However, this curriculum expects you to set aside time almost every day if you want to teach the full curriculum within one school year. The lessons are actually made up of several parts that are meant to be taught over a 2-week period.

I am an elementary school counselor, and I used almost all of the lessons included for a study skills class after school. This is a nice introduction to mindfulness and self-regulation.

I am a second grade teacher with 27 wonderful years of experience. This is by far one of the most intelligently written programs I have seen to aid in the social and emotional development of children. I piloted the program this year and found the lessons and activities engaging for the students, and easy to implement for the teacher. The children learned so much about their brains, the way they think and process, and how to optimize the use of their brains and senses. I taught the program right before standardized state testing, and it greatly helped the students focus and feel calm during a stressful two weeks. I also incorporated the lessons as part of our community service unit. It fit in beautifully! I think all students, grade K-12, would benefit from the simple, yet powerful, ideas and skills put forth by the MindUp creators.The only suggestion I would have is to actually expand the lessons to be more step-by-step, with lists of materials to have ready. It took quite a bit of work to plan out, prepare and script out what I was going to teach. I would suggest the authors look to a program like Second Step or FOSS to make the program more teacher-friendly and to make sure all suggested resources are readily available (many books are out of print). Perhaps online teacher videos such as FOSS has would be beneficial?Nevertheless, these are minor flaws. The $25 I spent for the book made it the cheapest, best professional program I have ever purchased! I HIGHLY recommend it to all teachers concerned about the development of the whole child. BRAVO!

This collection, much of which appeared in Croce's earlier works (Afterimage; Going to the Dance; Sight Lines), goes on to provide an insightful, discerning account of recent dance history. Croce was present for all of the high points: Baryshnikov's 1974 defection, Suzanne Farrell's return to the Balanchine fold from European exile the same year, Paul Taylor's emergence as a choreographic heavyweight, and the ever-evolving, occasionally explosive interweave between ballet and modern synthesis, among others. Croce pursues more scholarly offbeat interests at times: "Kyli n an and His Antecedents," on the Czech master, for one, and possibly her most controversial column, "Discussing the Undiscussable." This 1995 attack on what Croce calls "victim art" (in which she criticized a work she had not seen) caused a major brouhaha with choreographer Bill T. Jones and the wider artAnot just danceAworld. Croce's introduction provides some welcome personal notes: she herself never studied or performed dance or music at all, but she understands and explains her role as critic and witness (including, incidentally, how she makes notes in a darkened theater). Love the Book, writing is fabulous.

Croce's writing is a model of criticism--lucid, muscular, sometimes provocative, and deeply engaged. Did she get things wrong at times? Yes. Was she opinionated? Extremely. But what a writer. Utter clarity; no bull; no jargon.

Since Arlene Croce critized Bill T. Jones's 'Still/Here' without seeing it, I'll critize her book without reading it. I did read her original attack in the New Yorker.Croce's attack on Jones was rightly received by the dance world with repugnance and disbelief. I'm not surprised to read that she has no background in dance; she is also a shoddy human being.Buying this book puts money in the pocket of a monstrous person and her publisher. Avoid it -- and her -- like the plague.

This book is filled with aerial pictures of different parts of Paris. Paris is one of the most beautiful cities and this captures all of the most beautiful places all around the city in one book. It is great as a coffee table book for someone who loves Paris and great for a flip through as well.

I saw the wonderful video in Paris at the Marmottan Monet Museum. I was able to view his fantastic photographs exhibited there as well as see the video set to French songs. I bought the book and it is just a wonderful keepsake for anyone that loves Paris. My regret? That I can't get my hands on the incredible video as well. BUY THE BOOK!

I Didn't pay attention to how small it was, but Its a great little book.

It's a "must" for every bookcase. Splendid photos displayed in the appropriate size book. If you have been to Paris, you will see it like never before and if you haven't, you will definately want to visit it.

Absolutely beautiful pictures of a Paris we will never otherwise see. .... Our love affair with this fair city continues!!

I am cross-posting here my review of the smaller-format (and cheaper) version (ISBN-13: 978-2812308772) of this book published in 2013.With the 3 stars it seems I am being critical but it is a reflection of the editing rather than the photography.....................This somewhat smaller (in physical size; page number is identical) than the original edition. It is close to A4 size in landscape format and so is not "small" and I find the size to be perfectly adequate. The photography is of the expected high quality and reproduction is fine (the "cheaper" edition is presumably entirely about size rather than quality of print or paper etc). It is published by Editions du Chene/Hachette Livre and is printed in Italy.The imperfections relate to the formatting. For those only interested in a coffee-table book with pretty pictures and don't care much about the content, then they won't be bothered about my concerns.First, I have a gripe with many similar books when the information (caption) to each photo is not on the same page (or opposing page). Instead captions are grouped together approximately every ten pages, ie. with 8-10 captions together. That is marginally better than the even worse/dumber habit of some modern books of putting them all together at the end of the book! Worse, the location of the captions is not consistent--in some cases it is before the group of photos they describe, sometimes after, and in at least one case, both! It shouldn't be a chore to read about the photo. I suppose this is justified on the dubious argument that captions within the photos themselves would compromise the integrity of the photo. But I would prefer that or to have the photos slightly smaller on the page with the caption adjacent on the same page.Second, although I always am hungry for more information on the subject I would say the ≈50 to 100 words is not bad, however location information is inconsistent. Sometimes street addresses are given but sometimes there isn't a clue as to where the subject is. I reckon at minimum the arrondissement should be given (or suburb, as a few are just outside Paris). I really like to get a geographic feel for a city so I would actually like a map showing where the photos are taken. In fact the endpapers are double-page spreads of a satellite (or high-flying plane) image of Paris which is nice but for most people not very useful--it could have easily had the numbers of the photos on it.Third, the text pages are not numbered while the photo pages have the page number (and 2 or 3 word decriptor) in tiny print in the inner (binding) edge on both facing pages! This adds to gripe #2 in making it a real bore to connect the two or to find a photo from the caption, or the index.Fourth, the index is deeply inadequate. Only about half the photos or locations are listed (≈130 of 232) and are listed in a very uninformative, impractical manner, eg. all "Places" are listed under P. It is really quite trivial for a proper index to be compiled and I like it to be done in several ways, such as alphabetical (but using the unique name not the generic feature like P for Place or S for Square!) and by arrondissement (which is the primary way one thinks of Paris in a geo-location sense). Almost certainly the publisher already has this information compiled in some file.And that brings me to gripe at those editors. There were a whole bunch involved in the production of this book (7 listed in addition to the 2 authors), not counting the unpaid interns who probably did the actual work! So there is no real excuse for being so lazy on all these issues. They are really not adding much to the publishing exercise and are not serving the photographer well. Such a pity when one realizes how much time and effort has gone into getting these photos.There are really only two other comparable books.The first was Robert Cameron's (and Pierre Salinger) Above Paris (ISBN-13: 978-0918684196) which was published in 1984 (and to my knowledge not updated). Although it has fewer pages at 160 compared to 232, it somehow seems more comprehensive. That may partly be due to the larger format (book & pictures) and so each photo covers a wider aspect. The spectacular cover photo is an excellent example because it encompasses both islands, part of the Marais and right-bank highlights such as Hotel de Ville, Louvre, Centre Pompidou, Les Halles etc; and Leftbank. It also covers the near banlieu (cathedral Saint Denis, Neuilly etc), the airports and many of the fabulous chateaux in Ile de France.The other book is Philippe Guignard's "Paris Flying High" published in 2007 (ISBN-13 978-8854403413). It is a smaller format (a bit bigger than A5 in landscape) than the Arthus-Bertrand book, but I wouldn't hold that against it. At 518 pages it is two and a quarter times the size of the latter so it also feels more substantial.Both these other books have better organization with respect to captions but both don't have much in the way of geo-location information. I'm a fan of all three books so it is hard for me to suggest only one of them. This version of the Arthus-Bertrand book is a great bargain at the Amazon price

I am writing mostly in response to the comments from Dr J E Robinson (Jack in Toronto). I share Jack's general appraisal that this is a "wonderful" book and "the photos are stunning."However, I felt that Jack's references to the book's size/length ("short book...not big....all too short") might unduly discourage potential buyers. This is a magnificent book, over-sized, with many double-paged, marginless photographs. The page count, 183, is not great but this is not a "small" book. It comes in on my postal scale at 3 1/2 pounds! I could easily see this book priced at $... As long as Amazon continues to offer it at $..., it is aa terrific value.An extra feature of this book that I particularly enjoy is the color, satellite image on the endsheets (front and rear). This is a great image for keeping yourself oriented. I give it an enthusiastic five stars, both in absolute terms, and in acknowledgement of what seems to me an excellent value.

The images in this book are first rate and very vivid. Paris is of course a gorgeous city and making her look good is not that difficult, but this book does show her at her best. It's easy to forget at street level how green Paris is and how many parks and private green spaces the city possesses, when viewed for the air you see how brilliant Haussmann, Napoleon III's prefect of the Seine, redesigned the city. It was said he designed the grand boulevard so that the Emperor could easily get troops in in the event of politcal unrest, but whatever the reason it makes for a spectacularly beautiful city. I highly recommend this book to anyone with a love for Paris, and frankly who could not love this singular city.

Once again, I find National Geographic Kids books the go-to books whenever I need to get a good science guide for my four-year-old daughter. She was captivated as I read to her and even could answer all of the comprehension questions at the end, which I found really impressive. There is good vocabulary introduced such as "chrysalis" and "camouflage". We are raising our own caterpillars right now and this is a great companion guide to consult with and read as we watch the little critters grow and transform.

My 2 year old LOVES this entire series of Nat. Geo Readers... I have purchased about 25 different titles, "pre-readers" as well as Level 1 & 2 readers. She loves them all & will ask for certain ones. The "pre-readers" level books are extremely simple & great because she memorizes the words & can "read" it herself. We love the more advanced ones too, because there is more information to talk about. I have learned quite a few facts, myself!) What a great series. The price is reasonable & pictures are great. These are really getting her interested in nature, animals & science... I will continue to buy these as they are released, for our collection!

I gifted a caterpillar kit to my son's class and thought it would be fun to have something to read that correlated. This book is good for reading to children, as well as for kids who are able to do some reading on their own. The pictures are beautiful: bright, clear, and relevant to the text. The text is simple and concise, yet very informative for young scientists. There are fun facts and riddles for kids throughout the book as well. Overall, would definitely recommend, mainly for kindergarten to maybe even 2nd grade. His teacher is thrilled with it as well.

Was a birthday present along with a butterfly garden for my 7-yr old granddaughter. She absolutely loved this book, could read it herself and was fascinated by the pictures. When the caterpillars in her butterfly garden became large enough to form a chrysalis she would explain to everyone why and how it happened, then she waited patiently for the emerging butterfly always checking with her book in hand. She has now decided that her next year's science project will be to follow the stages of butterfly development. All due to this book. She wants to photograph her own stages and has already learned to spell the important new words in development. Thank you for this science boost for Ellie.

Bought this to go with our caterpillar to butterfly project. My 3 yr old grand-daughter was fascinated to learn about their transformation. We read the book when we received our "cup of caterpillars," then we kept referring back to the pictures throughout the weeks, as they formed into chrysalides, then into butterflies. Great book with plenty of photographs. Good for teaching.

My son loves this book, as do I. National Geographic hit a home run on this one.Not present is National Geographic's habit of digitally adding unnecessary characters to host the book, or their penchant for unnecessary vocabulary ("mojo", for example).What is present are caterpillars and butterflies. Lots of them. In photos and in text, the book is sure to captivate the interest of children everywhere.Oh, and two tips for parents whose children request they read this book over and over to the point where you groan when they want you to read the book. First, liven up the book by substituting the word "monster" for "butterfly". This sent my son into gales of laughter one evening. Second, amuse yourself by adding the word "midlife" before the word "chrysalis". The play on words will be entirely lost on your child, and it'll bring a smile to your own face.Then buy another National Geographic Books and hide the one you've read twenty times in the last month.

I have liked all of the National Geographic readers. We got this one when I did a live butterfly habitat with my 6 yr old as a homeschool science project and it made a very nice lesson. Beautiful pictures, good vocabulary, great explanations of the life cycle and shows a lot of different types of butterflies with their names (important because we always want to know!) These books also make good beginning readers for when your child moves into that stage of reading. Great purchase!

This is a very informative book for kids about the life cycle of butterflies. It is just a basic knowledge of butterflies in general, no info on different colors/names of the different butterflies, my 4 1/2 year old grandson was wanting to know about when we saw the 1st butterflies of the season in the back yard while he was playing in his sand box. It turned out that the ones we saw were actually a yellow swallowtail/male and black swallowtail/female and a small black butterfly/baby. I finally found that info on the internet.

My daughters have been fascinated by butterflies since infancy. This was a great purchase, as it seemed a bit more "grown up" but was still very accessible to them. It had more information than you'd expect from a 'baby' book, and bridged the gap nicely between starter and early reader.
